He should not be paid more than 8 million a year. He is not better than Ovie, who is worth is price.

To the Thrashers he is. I think it's Kovy who is not signing the contract not the thrashers who wont give it to him.

Moneywise guy like Kovalchuk can easily be worth the max. All the jerseys that flashy plays sell and media coverage that stats get is just what Atlanta needs. But when talking about building successful franchise, it is too much to a sniper. I think that there is only 2 players in the league who can deliver in the rink for that kind of amount, Sid and Alex.

If Crosby and Malkin make less than 9 million, Ovechkin makes ~9 million on a deal that eats away his prime UFA years, and guys like Alfredsson and Thornton make less than 7.5 million, I don't see how Kovalchuk can justify 7 million, let alone 11. When Gaborik signed for 8.5/year, most people thought it was an overpayment, and even with his stellar play, he is at best justifying such a massive deal.

Of course, then you have Drury/Gomez/Briere/Heatley/Nash...

I don't know; I could see Gretzky/Lemieux/Orr being worth that much. Maybe even guys like Forsberg/Jagr/Bossy/Hull during various points in their careers.

Kovalchuk could probably sell Thrasher merchandise well but only locally. Unlike Crosby, Malkin and OV whose franchises pay $9M annual but sell Penguin & Capital merchandise on a nationwide level.

Lol at the biggest contract of all time going to a forward who's never had a 100-point season but meanwhile isn't known at all for his two-way play.

If Atlanta signs him for as much as Ovechkin or more, it's for financial reasons, not because of his play. They need the star to keep the franchise taking any revenue at all.

Other way around considering ATL draws flies now. What will they do with an 11 mill player with the cap going down? ATL will really suck trying to build a team.

So really signing Kovalchuk for that much is just bad in every way.

I'd say Orr/Lemieux/Gretzky would be worth that much.

I say no but I wouldn't say he's mad with power. The guy's an elite talent and deserves and elite contract. The problem is, he isn't quite $11 million elite.

An 11 million dollar contract for Kovy ensures that Atlanta will not be competitive going forward. Simple as.

Him asking for 11 million - if he has, which I find difficult to believe - would only tell management that he is not concerned with winning. Which should be the priority of every team. Or... that he doesn't want to stay there. In either scenario the consequence ought to be the same.

Depends for who. If a team has the capspace, yeah, if not then no.

Is Rick Nash worth 7.8 Million? No.

But to his Franchise he is worth it because he is the one who sells seats, just like Kovy.

I wouldn't give him that money though in a cap world

signing kovalchuk for 11mill would almost be worse for atlanta than letting him walk and investing that 11mill elsewhere

IMO it will take 10M+ to keep him ATL but if (when) he goes to free agenct he will get 8-8.5M.

He's spent 7 years there and hasn't won 1 playoff game yet, wouldn't it take you a huge amount to stay too?

No, he's obviously not worth $11 million a year.

$7.5 million a year sounds about right.

There's no one in the league at the moment who would be worth $11m.
