Exactly. On the surface he was the prime player for a salary dump. But he's the frigging captain. That's huge (and I'm not automatically saying its bad, it's just huge).

Maybe Laich, Knuble, Ovie, BreMo (etc.) is enough in that room. That's not really the type of "do it just to bank the cap space" move, though. Something else is cooking, either an upcoming move or some behind-the-scenes friction that we haven't seen.

And all of this to get the guy that injured Ovechkin. ( sorta)

Trading your captain mid-season, I don't know about that. Yeah, the guy hasn't really produced, and has a somewhat prohibitive cap hit, but that's a ballsy move. Especially considering how good of a "room" that Caps purportedly have.

Maybe they're trying to put the team on Ovechkin's shoulders and get him to keep asserting himself more.

I'm not sure.

I just can't fathom the team moved Clark, unless they have a good shot at getting another piece and need the cap space. Kaberle looks bigger right now.

I don't understand the hand-wringing.

Chimera's cheaper (though signed longer) and brings many of the same on-ice things to the team.

The Caps shed salary, and make room.

They have veteran leaders in the room, as well as some young ones.

Good trade.

Best of luck to Jurcina and Clark, and thanks for their time as Caps.

Wasnt Ryan Walter our C when we brought in Langway and turned this team around?

Clark has missed a ton of games. And a captains best work is done on the ice. It had become apparent that injuries had taken their toll. I loved his game in his prime. I think Ovi and Laich have been our defacto captains more than Clarkie for some time now.

Walter wore the C in that Laughlin trade. Langway wore the C in his first game as a Cap, if my memory serves correctly.

Interesting take:

FriedmanHNIC: "If I was Bruce Boudreau, I would make Mike Knuble the captain. Incredibly respected, a guy Ovechkin really listens to."

Won't happen, but I haven't heard this in too many places.

Ovy's gotta be the next C. I think Laich would be great in the role, but he doesn't even wear an 'A'.

Yeah, but Ovie's already having the best year of his career in terms of pace. Why fix what ain't really broken in that respect?

If it's Laich, though, maybe it's to get him to reemerge? This is just strange.

i don't necessarily disagree hugely, but chimera doesn't bring a lick of goal scoring. clark put up more goals in two years (pre-injuries, i know) than chimera's put up his entire nhl career. yes, it's hyperbole. but not much.

The only part that could be better is more of a playoff history from Chimera, but the immediate salary cap angle to this is sweet. The Capitals are carving out a good chunk of deadline room to maneuver. That killed them compared to the Penguins last season. This trade is about sending some good soldiers (who were wholly expendable) for cap space.

I think Chimera could put up 20-25 goals or so playing with Ovechkin. Ovechkin and Backstrom, and 30 wouldn't be shocking.
