P.K. Subban Named to AHL All Stars

Subban has been named to the AHL All Stars as he was voted as a starter (along with Nolan Baumgartner) Congrats to him on making the All Stars in his first year. Cedrick Desjardins will be joining him as well.

I'll move this to the Hamilton thread later, just thought everyone would want to hear about Subban.

This is why he didn't start the year in the NHL.

1 year of dominating in the AHL > 1 year of learning the ropes in the NHL.

Yeeeee our boy making an impact! My doubts about him are quickly dying!

Also, apparently I have some connection to Baumgartner, he's a friend of my cousin's? Or something like that.

Every time I think about PK's future with us, I try to lower my expectations the most I can so there's little place for sadness if he busts. The problem is, every time, there's news like this one that come out about him. How he's such a great leader, how he's such an offensive dynamo, how he's much better defensively than he was before, how he made the AHL All-Star team's sarting squad in his first year in the league.

PK is the man!

That's amazing news!

But Corey Locke is still there...meaning that one can be an AHL all-star his whole career and not be able to play a regular shift in the NHL.

EDIT: Wow... Those Locke stats are absolutely crazy throughout his career (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p....php?pid=59655)

I don't understand why he never translated to the NHL... I don't think he was given a chance. Oh well. Not our prospects, not our problem. Anyways, someone who dominates this early in his career has a very good chance of translating into NHL stuff.

I saw part of the Bulldogs-Marlies game yesterday and PK really stood out. He controls the PP very well. But you already knew that .

slow, not a great skater, lack of lower body strength, questions about his work ethic, not great in his own end.

Big difference when you get named as a starter as a 20 year old playing a tough position like defense.

Groulx is a heck of an AHLer though. Two guys that made it that I wanted us to sign as undrafted free agents, Charles Linglet and Maxim Noreau. Glad to see them doing well.

Don't forget Desjardins. This guy has crazy stats in Hamilton. I think this guy could come out of nowhere and become a good backup once Halak gets traded or he could be in a package in a trade.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the D next season.I'll assume Mara and MAB are allowed to walk. I'd also guess that gorges gets dealt leaving us with:

Markov-Hamrlik
Spacek-O'Byrne
Gill-Subban

1st PP
Markov-Spacek/Subban
2nd PP
Hamrlik-Subban/Spacek

1st PK
Gill-Hamrlik
2ndPK
O'Byrne-Markov

He's weak and slow. He has a lot of offensive talent, but you have to be an incredible talent, which Locke isn't, to be able to overcome that awful combination of strength and speed at the NHL level.

He's really in the same boat as a bunch of other players who are too weak and/or too slow to be effective in the NHL, but who are talented enough to dominate the AHL.

Great news for PK, it couldn't happen to a better kid.

I'm really surprised he hasn't been given more of a chance than he has. He has done really well everywhere he's played.

The kid's only played 1 NHL game, and that was with us.

I understand the speed and strength issue but it hasn't really slowed him done much in the A. I'm surprised he wasn't given at least 10-12 games to show if he could hack it.

That's because AHL players are slower and weaker than NHL players. There is also a lot less talent in that league. That's why players similar Locke have thrived in the AHL, but were never able to become solid NHLers. The gap between the AHL and the NHL is quite large and some players just can't translate their AHL success to the NHL.

I still remember Carbo during one training camp saying Corey Locke played better than Ribeiro and Ribs being traded the following week.

Check out Darren Haydar stats (another who's not a NHLer).
