Andrei Kostitsyn
Sergei Kostitsyn
Weber
Halak
3 1st rounders
and still I don't think Atlants does it...
3 first rounders, a top 6 forward, a potential top 6 forward, a solid proven back up goalie, and a potential PP QB in Weber.....I would put on my boots and wait for Gainey on Monday morning and spit in his face if he EVER made that deal. That's Horra-awful for Montreal, just terrible.
3 First Rounders - Really??? The guy's not Ovechkin or Crosby. I'd put him on par with Gaborik, Kane, Nash, Thornton. No way he's worth that much, no way.

Dude, the guy now has 46 points in 34 games and 2 periods, 24 of those goals, 2 away from the league leader even though he has missed 7 games.
He has averaged 46 goals over the last 5 seasons dating back to 2003-04. 46 FREAKIN GOALS A YEAR!
He's the 2nd best goal scorer in the world despite playing with crappy players.
Yes, he's worth 20 goal scorer Andrei and 10 goal scorer Sergei and Weber.
One of my favorite players in the league but it's pretty safe to say we won't acquire Kovalchuk. And he wants 10 million per year, not with our cap situation

Yes, I agree he's worth those 3 players, but not 3 first round draft picks and Halak on top of it. You just can't trade away first rounders in the salary cap era. You need those young CHEAP guys to come through the ranks to cover your bottom couple of lines. You can't fill your roster anymore with all free agents. You need those rookie contracts. IF we were to trade away 3 first rounders, it would devastate our team salary cap wise for years to come. It basically means you don't draft in the 1st round until 2013?!?
I directly compared Kovalchuk to the leagues top goal scorer, I just don't think he has the "IT" factor that a guy like Crosby or Ovechkin has. Those guys are worth multiple first round picks and more. Remember Lindros and Gretzky were traded for 2 and 3 first rounds respectively, along with bits and pieces...lol Peter Forsberg
CBC's After 40 panel just speculated that Chicago might be in the running.
The reasoning is that Chicago sees it as an opportunity to add a great player while solving salary cap issues.
Basically, Chicago could trade 2 or 3 genuinely good (but overpaid) players for Kovalchuk, and actually benefit cap-wise. Atlanta has the cap space for the deal.

WOW if chicago tries and get him they will be a team thats unstoppable!
Kovalchuk will be where the money is next year....who has lots of money next year................TORONTO! stay away from Kovalchuk its not worth the money!
as much as i like Kovalchuk the only offer i would make for him will be like hamrlik weber and conditional picks or something like that but there will have to be alot of stuff as condition for him signing to make it worth i dont think Kovalchuk is really that greedy and will ask for 11 million i just think he wants out of Atlanta and who can blame him? if he gets traded to a playoff team and he likes it there im sure he will go for 8 million on long term deal

Versteeg + Barker + 1st
As a Hawks fan I would love to see it
Hawks get a gamebreaker who can put us over the top while the Thrashers get a young top 6 LW/RW , top 4 dman + pick.
If Chicago did do the trade as a strictly win it all now as a rental and to relieve themselves of cap it maybe a good lure to Kovalchuk to come back to Atlanta as well?
It would show initiative to Kovalchuk that the Thrashers are committed to winning and would have some great pieces there to go forward with.
i dontthink id want kovalchuk losing alot unless montreal is in the top 4 in east i doubt they make such a big trade to only lose him on july 1st. maybe make a trade for a player like jordan staal or maxim talbot from pittsburgh, or Tuomo Ruutu from Carolina, could be had at the deadline. be a good pick up for the top 6

I like the idea of Staal or Ruutu, but Staal would be way too expensive.
Ruuto is an interesting option, but if Pouliot continues to play as he has? There will be no need for another top 6 winger as he will be that guy.
