Can New Giants Stadium even host it? The appeal of baseball stadiums seems more to be the fact that they can have the ice on the field for over a month without upsetting any other events.

I don't know what the demolition schedule for Old Giants Stadium is. Could it be hosted there? A football stadium would be better just because if you are sitting anywhere in the first deck in a baseball stadium you can probably only see the players' heads as they skate by, which seemed even worse at Fenway because they had way too many people allowed to sit right at the glass. Football seats are elevated about 10 feet or so.

No it wouldn't. The mock up for the Notre Dame game shows the football field end zones as being on the warning track to home plate. Both Winter Classics, the goals were at first and third, slightly behind the pitchers mound.

Can't use football stadiums. You don't know what team will be hosting a playoff game or home game.

Old Giants Stadium is coming down ASAP to make the parking lot for the new stadium.

That being said, I can't see New Giants Stadium as the home of a WC involving a NY team. I don't think a football field in New Jersey has enough linkage to New York sports from the outside looking in. It won't make sense to the average viewer.

Plus, who knows whether the Jets or Giants will have a home game a couple of days later (like today).

At least that close to 1/1/11 it does. They started preparations of the rink in Buffalo on 12/24. It's been earlier every year since that and I believe they started nearly a month in advance this year.

Wrigley was, but Fenway wasn't.

So basically we can rule out:

Yankee Stadium - Bowl game scheduled for late December.
Old Giants Stadium - Coming down soon after the football season ends.
New Giants Stadium - There will be a Week 16 and Week 17 game there (one for the Jets and one for the Giants).

So why have they been taking so long to set up the last 2 years?

That was my argument before. Have the Bowl game on the 25th. You have a lot of man power setting up preparations. So things can get done pretty quickly. Does it NEED 2 weeks?? Like you said Buffalo that began only a few days prior to New Years day.

I don't think Bettman will have the Rangers play in Giants Stadium because he probably gets confused when he hears Giants Stadium is in New Jersey. Therefore being the genius that he is, Buttman will assume attendance will be low

Giants Stadium is NOT an option unless the Jets AND Giants do not play a single home game in Weeks 14-17.

You have to take into account how protective of the field the Yankees are too. Having a football game then immediately rushing to host a hockey game would leave the field in less than desirable shape. There was an article I read talking about them not wanting their field crew working through the month of February to repair the field, I'll see if I can track it down again.

From the NHL's perspective the ice surface has been improved every year since by having it in place longer. Fenway also made buckets of money being able to rent out the ice for 10k an hour for corporate skates.

Either way it appears that the NHL feels more comfortable with substantially more time than ~7 days to pull off an event of this magnitude if they've progressively started earlier and earlier.

Being a recent Cornell grad I feel the impulsion to defend a fellow alum, as it would otherwise undermine all the hard work I put in the last 4 years

Either way, with the way they constructed YS it would behoove them to follow the football field model. Otherwise their efforts to construct a more adaptable stadium were pointless.

Anyone have photoshop skills or whatever of the rink as it would look at CitiField or Yankee Stadium?

I can't photoshop but in the other thread there are actual pictures from Fenway of the sight lines to give you an idea. You wouldn't catch me at either venue if they go the horizontal route, those views/prices are horrendous.

the NHL likes to get a lot of use out of the ice as well...open skates, this year college games, etc.

that would be a real cool way for Giants stadium to go out, since the Giants failed to make it something worth remember

How about Rangers vs Capitals in Nationals Park? I've been there, and it's a great looking park. Good sight lines and etc.

my one problem is i would love to sing the Rangers goal song in a football or baseball stadium. That's up to 3 times as many people screaming "hey, hey, hey hey hey!"

you won't get that if the Rangers are the away team

We would have to score a goal first.

Did you guys see some of the sightlines from the Boston/Philly game? HORRIBLE... Some of the fans in the lower levels had to resort to watching the game on the huge monitors they erected.... Imagine paying all that money for those lower level seats only to find out you can't even see the game?

They need to try and host it in a football stadium IMHO.
