Exactly. Getzlaf can be every bit as lethal as Corsby or Thornton & if the puck doesn't go in for him then some poor soul is going to get his eyelids blown off when he comes back mad & hitting. I love this player.

The way I look at it: The scoring chances that are going to decide the Gold Medal are going to be hand-crafted by Crosby. Therefore, they want 2 wingers who they feel will be the BEST fits for the types(s) of plays Sid is going to make. The list gets shorter when you trim off guys who can't shoot high from in close or guys who are good in one corner but not the other, or guys who can't catch a long pass on their back hand...all these little details are vital for this tournament format. The slection crew studies all of this stuff and they put paramount emphasis on it.

There aren't too many players like Bergeron. Really rare to have a guy who can play a 360 degree game. Crosby can compensate when he doesn't have it against generic opposition...but against Olympic teams...you can't have Bill Guerin out there with him. The entire line becomes a liability very quickly.
So what makes Bergeron that guy? The fact that they played together at the WJCs and lit up a bunch of teenagers? Maybe Pouliot and Roussin should've made Team Canada. They spent years together and showed great chemistry with Sid in Rimousky and combined for almost 400 points one year. Surely that kind of chemistry is invaluable in a short tournament like the Olympics.

Take a look at what Corsby's done in the NHL, and then consider that he's had a different set of wingers every year and put up close to the same numbers. He doesn't need Bergeron to bring out the best in him. He's had chemistry with Dupuis, Satan, Kunitz, Recchi, Guerin, Armstrong, and the list goes on.

I'm not saying Chemistry isn't important, but just because they played 8 games together back in 2005, it doesn't mean that's a reason to put Bergeron on the team (and I'm not even against Bergeron's inclusion).

His skills are replicated by the other 3 centres and so are some of his weaknesses. He's not particularily good on the draw and he doesn't kill penalties. He's a very good offensive player and he's gotten better defensively, but this team needs less of the first and more of the 2nd.

He's completely redundant on this team.

Physically dominant playmaking centres who are beasts at ES are NEVER redundant.

He's one of the most complete players in the NHL. Richards is one of the best PKers in the world, he's on the team. Getzlaf CAN take a PK shift, he just doesn't.

If those wingers in PIT are so good why is there a list longer than my arm of guys who played with 87 in the past 5 years? Come on Misfit. Ive seen every one of them TRY to be good with Crosby and every one of them has moments...even Mike Rupp...but outside of Guerin & Kunitz...a bunch of Denver Boots.

And you know what the outcome is that PIT worries about (and this is why they toggle through wingers): It wears The Kid down...having to do 2 jobs at once. He can do it...but not for 90+ GP's/year every year. There would be nothing left of him.

The deal here on the Oly team is...we want guys who will give the puck back to Crosby. We want a give & go game but we don't want to over-pass it either. Im not meaning to say there is only 1 or 2 guys who can play with him...of course a lot of different guys could have some chemistry but I still think they picked ALL these forwards with a distinct style of play in mind.

I'm gonna have to agree that you are undervaluing Getzlaf here... If he brings his game face to Vancouver (and he will, make no mistake ;p) he will be one of the hardest players there to play against. I'm nearly entirely convinced that he will be harder to handle than Thornton, and I have always been on Thornton's side when the mob rolls through town.

He's an olympic caliber wearer-downer

i have a question; why isn't brad richards on this team? Incredibly versatile, top 10 in NHL scoring, olympic experience. He can do it all. He deserves to be there.... seriously.

Actually I agree with that. I think Richards should have been on the team, I also think they should have found a spot for either Doan or Vinny L... a little bit of extra experience cant hurt.

I agree with Brad Richards. Should be on the squad. I'd consider Doan as well ... someone's gotta be doing something really right in Phoenix.
