I'd expect him to clear.

Unless a team needs a project PMD, he's going to Portland.

True. Great team-first guy, has kept his spirits up and attitude positive according to the team beat reporters and word out of the dressing room despite now being the 8th defenseman and/or the 13th forward.

I expect he'll still be either with the team or in Portland on Wednesday.

Most teams already have a decent top 6 and reasonably priced #7's. Paetsch is on the books for a million dollars this year ($1,050,000 in real salary, $850K cap hit). I would assume teams are more willing to let him pass than take a chance on someone who's 8th on someone else's depth chart.

On one hand he can play the point on the Powerplay and can put up points if given the ice time. He has also played left wing on the forth line.

On the other hand he is not a Power play QB is much too small and doesn't have the defensive skills to make him anything more then a 7th defensemen. Although he has played as a forward he hasn't done much if anything in that role, even by forth liner standards.

Actually now that I think about it, I can sum Paetsch up in one sentence. He's a poor mans Brian Campbell except without the exceptional skating.

It depends. All teams are not created equal. If your team is looking for a 7th defenseman/14th forward, Paetsch may be a guy you look at. He's very much an marginal player. If he's picked up at all, it will probably be by a team depleted at defense or who wants to send a young player down for more playing time. Paetsch provides some versatility, but most teams will likely choose to stick with what they have.

I think most of us Sabres fans have been wanting this to happen for a while. Could it be just like Mair's situation, where Darcy wants to see if he'll get claimed so he can play rather than sitting in the pressbox? I have a feeling if he clears he won't be reassigned.

I would not be shocked to see the Oilers pick him up. They could then look to move Staios for a draft pick. Paetsch would also fit right now with Visnovsky out for a couple of weeks.

The Oilers would only do it if they planned to move Staios or Grebeshkov soon.

Yan Stastny is reportedly on recall waivers, as well.

it hasnt made sense that we've kept paetsch up to this point- we've been basically paying him to practice and watch games from the press box.

btw zip15, what is your avatar of??

True -- talk radio alluded to this being similar to the Mair situation from earlier in the year. And that was a move made at the player's request to see if anyone wanted him. I suspect Paetsch is still with the Sabres in three hours.

As expected, Paetsch cleared waivers and is staying up with the Sabres...very questionable move IMO.

How is it questionable if the player asked to be offered around to the rest of the league? Or is it that they didn't assign him that has you wondering about the move?

That they didn't assign him, I thought they should have done this out of training camp or sooner. He could play in Portland and at least get some playing time and it would open up a roster spot for a forward up here. I like the way Mair has played, but I'd rather see a guy like Gerbe or Ennis in our lineup if at all possible

he had one good year(I think he ran shotgun for campbell) and that is it

he is a 5-6 d-man who is missing something to move up the depth chart

Stupid that we keep a player in the roster who we really don't need. Gerbe or Ennis could be way better kick-in-the-ass type of player for the top than what Paetsch brings to the table. It's just stupid, plain stupid! Maybe if this is to keep Paetsch happy, thats the only reason I accept this thing with him in the waivers.

You have to look this whole situation from another point of view. If we don't have an injury with any of the top 6 guys, why should we bring Ennis/Gerbe up here? Just to keep em playing isn't a reason good enough. These guys are our future and sitting them in press box doesn't really do any good for us.

If Regier doesn't have any trade to do/up in the works or we intend to sit some (better) player, there is not reason to bring our better players up from Portland. This waiver thing seems to be all about keeping Paetsch even remotely happy.

And pardon my english, it really isn't my mother language. I'm finnish you know

Eh, Kaleta is probably back tomorrow and they have 30 days to assign Paetsch now that he's cleared. I expect him to be in Portland on the weekend.

No issues with your language.
