If Kovalchuk is not signed by Atlanta and he is traded I have the Hawks as front runners UNLESS some team is hell bent on getting him by any means necessary [Boston, Edmonton, Toronto]..

I posted this two months ago when kovy contract talks started to go south [or seem to]..

I highly doubt Eklund has any 'serious' inside sources...

Eklund just pays attention to the hockey world and sees 'potential' in trades by knowing teams and knowing their needs and knowing who could fill those needs [or roster spots] and what teams have the appropriate assets to make those trades possible..

Ill bet the majority of Eklunds sources are journalists....

LA has been linked with so many big named players over the last few years and nothing ever happens.

What about Buffalo? They're a potential contender lacking an offensive superstar, and I don't think they're in too bad of a cap situation.

Raymond
Bieksa
Schneider
1st rounder in 2010

To Van:

Kovalchuk
4th rounder in 2010

Or any common sense for that matter. Does he really think it's logical for bottom feeding teams to trade assets for a rental? That is exact opposite of what they want to do.

Kovulchuk isn't going for spare parts.

Nobody wants Schneider. Bieska is a rental that is useless to a team looking to rebuild. Not to mention you've ***** the Canucks of their defensive depth.

Factor in losing Raymond (best forward not named Sedin right now), and are the Canucks really that much better from this trade?

To be fair Raymond and a 1st are more than spare parts.

Hossa along with Dupuis received as a return:

Esposito
Armstrong
Christienson
and a First

Raymond is probably better than any of those players. Raymond, a first and a mid-level prospect is probably pretty close to value for a rental..... even if it is Kovalchuck.

Adding a sniper like Kovalchuk and having him play with the two elite playmakers on the PP is my definition of better.

Euh... Montreal? Really?

That means two things :

- Gomez has to go Atlanta's way (along with other assets, obviously)
- Plekanec will have to leave as there's no way we can sign him if we sign Kovalchuck

Which means a third thing :

- Did Kovy had good chemistry with Glen Metropolit in Atlanta?

Unless Montreal is just looking for deadline help, in which case we probably have to give ... Well, Andrei Kostitsyn (pointless to suggest Pouliot, really), amongst others.

There is no doubt that the first line PP would be improved, but Raymond and Bieska both play very important parts on the team.

IMO it's an improvement, but not enough to make the Canucks true contenders. It doesn't really make sense to give up key components of the team for a rental.

Imagine what goes on in Vancouver if management gives up raymond and a first and gets knocked out in the first round.

Bieksa out 2-3 months, STOP saying he'll get moved

Vancouver's w/out Bieksa for 2-3 months w/ severed tendons. he's out.

BUT

Vancouver might be able to get into the mix on a deal... though they might not get Kovy... Here's my proposal:

CHI

Versteeg, Barker > ATL
Sopel, Skille, 2nd > VAN

VAN

Raymond > ATL

ATL

Kovalchuk, 2nd > CHI
Kubina > VAN

ATL replaced Kubina & his expiring contract w/ Barker, and gets two stud Ws in Versteeg and Raymond.

VAN replaces Bieksa for the next couple months with Kubina and adds Sopel for depth on the blue line at the expense of only Raymond (a lot, but they would get value back).

CHI would get a blue chip LW for an all-in Cup run and would dump a TON of salary ($8.5M cap #) in the deal.

I don't think VAN are looking to move their biggest offensive prospect currently playing on the team. You gotta look at guys like Demitra, Bernier, Wellwood, etc.

Untouchable forwards in VAN: Raymond, Kesler, Burrows, Sedins

No way Atlanta moves Kovy for Demitra, Bernier, Wellwood, etc.

One of Raymond or Kesler will be going for sure along with our first in 2010.

29 teams in the league can offer a much better package for Atlanta.

If you don't have a NMC, you can be traded anytime, anywhere.

Chiarelli should be pushing hard for Kovy. He has the assets from the Toronto trade and Boston needs a sniper more than any team mentioned on this page.
