Guys, it's a throat-slash gesture. It's been an offense in this league for a long time now. It's automatic or as close to automatic gets with the fools that run this league. It's not a big deal.
It's also a no-brainer, don't-do-it type of thing...

It makes the league look bad because, obviously, it's a visual statement.

Ironically, I am sure that Carcillo (and hundreds of other players) have said far, far worse things but verbal threats don't matter much unless you push the wrong Referee's buttons.

Yep. The last thing the league needs is a visual image of someone using a gesture that quite literally is meant as a threat to kill (that's where it comes from folks, even if you don't think he literally means it). You can say whatever you want as long as it isn't on tape (outside of the very few things that cross the line -- racial slurs).

I understand why they did it based on the image, but I just don't like how sensitive people are to things like this. I've seen some stuff like this in football without fines as well. I've also seen things get fines that I don't think should have. I am at a loss with how sensitive our culture has become with things like political correctness and hand gestures like this, but thats a conversation for a different day.

well sean avery's only nhl suspension came because he called elisha cuthbert sloppy seconds. They've made it clear in the past that disrespect for your peers will be met with harsh discipline. People think its because he's a flyer, it's not. It's because the league is aware that he is and likes to be a sideshow. At some point it will get old for the flyers too, generally players don't like to play with those guys. Ask matthew barnaby how he had to clean up his act once he left buffalo.

I had the game on but I was working at the same time and missed it. What exactly did he do?

additionally, the nhl and its players pride themselves on holding themselves to high standards as people. They have better reputations than the nba or nfl where they have people getting involved with guns and jail and drugs other extra circculars . Some of the actions in other major sports would never be tolerated whereas some things like this that dont seem serious are to the league because of the image they portray - they consider themselves above that stuff.

That's the thing though. The vast majority of people aren't truly sensitive like that. They just think they have to be otherwise other parents (who are the same) will develop a bad opinion of them. It's bs, and it's all ego and selfish vanity.

I don't have a problem if people complain about those things - opinions are fine - but anytime outright banning is involved it annoys me. Throat slashes I can easily live without, I just wonder how far it will go. I'm not mad in any way about this tiny incident, it's the whole slippery slope thing. Where it comes from bothers me because I've seen it ruin or limit so many other types of media and the reasons behind it just aren't good ones.

Bang on. Can you imagine how bad it would look if someone on the opposing team did this to Zhitnik before he caught that skate to his neck? Ugh.

I sincerely doubt Colton Orr went after Richards over this.

Didn't Sandy McCarthy get in trouble for doing the "Chicken Wings" thing in the playoffs a few years ago (well I guess it would be like ten years ago now)? Or am I imagining that.

It wasn't just this, but it was grouped with Carcillo refusing to fight him, Carcillo making him look like an ass not even 10 seconds after Orr tried to fight him by breaking Schenn's ankles and having Gustavsson out on Pattison Ave. with his monster deke.

Carbomb should just go back to his finger pistols. Just fits him. Somehow Dan Carcillo sounds to me like some outlaw cowboy. Also just had the best idea in the history of the universe: Cactus Jack Carcillo.

I love the "rock on" thing he's started doing after a fight. Loved it during the winter classic, loved it after the Mayers fight.

I would say Orr took issue with the Boarding call, and that is why he went after Richards.

But on topic, who cares, he got fined, he can pay it, we all move on.

Anyway, it's only a matter of time before they fine him for stepping onto the ice.

Wow.

Apparently Bettman & Co. have never seen a presser with a cranky coach before. Any sport. They're some of the best rants around.
