This.

And if someone sheets him I say let them, I just don't want the ones to overpay for him with the young defensive talent we have in the system.

I would be totally down with what Inferno is proposing, if there's any chance Staal himself would go for that.

10 years, $35 million would probably be a bargain in the long run.

He won't his brothers have both dealt with contracts before and will probably give him some insight. I can see him being tough to sign honestly. Hopefully not.

^This.
The offensive element of his game isn't strong enough to warrant anything more.

Staal ain't getting 5 million. That's insane for an RFA. 3 - 3.5 million max imo, which is about what he's worth.

I'd give him a four year deal worth $16 million. I'd give him $4 mill a year. He's turning 23 in a couple of days. He's only going to get better. That's a fact. He's a defensive defenseman, so I'm not surprised one bit if he doesn't score more than 15-20 points a season. Not all defenseman have to score points.

And anything else, he's worth the money. Just my opinion.

Come on, no way Staal agrees to that. Anyway, I don't know if it's a good idea to guarantee players so much money when they're still relatively young.

What I hope happens is maybe like a 3 year deal for 3 million, and then a long-term 6 or 7 year deal @ like 4 million (unless he improves considerably... in that case more like 5 million)

I could see Staal waiting for some offer sheets though. Not sure if he really cares about playing here, although I hope he does

3 years $10MM (Seabrook) or 3 years $14MM (Burns are good starting points. Each year you had will be a more expensive year.
