Redden to minors?

Bruce Garroich, of the Ottawa Sun, is reporting that the time may have finally come for Wade Redden.

Unless there's a trade to follow it, I don't see it happening. No way this team is going to play 5 defensemen with under 3 years experience.

Why now? We planning on trying to aquire Kovalchuk?

Its not like he has played poorly enough to justify sending him down for anything other than cap reasons.

Also... Cant we get strung up for 3.25 mil if he gets claimed by somebody?

Only on reentry waivers. On the way down the team would take the whole contract.

No chance this goes down. Redden has actually been pretty good in the role that he now plays, and while that role certainly doesn't justify his salary, we are essentially stuck him.

training camp is gonna be fun next year. we have a glut of young d men knocking on the door and there's no guarantees that redden will make the team.

I hate rumors like this. I get all excited and when it doesn't happen it's disappointing.
If we're going to get Kovalchuck this summer some kind of move like this needs to made. Ugh I never get tired of speaking how hideous that contract is.

I doubt Redden goes down. He would get claimed at half the price. I don't care how bad everyone thinks he is. 3 million is about right for the guy. It's not like he is useless he just has the worst contract.

The team is playing well . I doubt this goes down now if ever and if it does say hello to a cap hit.

Rozy has trade value now he would the one to go to shed salary

There's nothing citing Ranger sources, just "there's been talk"...besides it's Garrioch.

He would only be available at half the price on recall waivers. Barring a trade, this move would be the end of Redden's NHL career.

Its Garrioch, enough said. This only happens if the Rangers are going after Kovy. I really doubt this happens.

My take on this:

The only way this happens is if the Rangers continue to roll and Sather & Co. believe that this team can make a playoff run with an additional one or two pieces from someone dealing at the deadline. As it stands, they have very little cap room to work with and jettisoning Redden provides huge relief in that area. It's not like Redden can't be replaced with some other serviceable D. He and Gilroy have been playing the least amount of minutes over this past stretch of games and Rozy has stepped up his game. I could see them having the nuts to do this.

Never going to happen.....

What has Wade Redden done to deserve being demoted to the AHL?

He signed for too much $$$

Sather is not going to hold that over his head, he's just not. Redden has been OK. Not 6 million great but he's not a bad defensman.

Send him to Hartford and every agent is going to be insisting on NMC for their clients down the road.

Its not a smart move in the long run.... imo

There has been talk...Here on HF!

Garroich is a rumor-monger! But I definately question his scources, and wonder if they aren;t anything more than fans posting on message boards.

Only reason for this now is if we really need the space for a trade. No one in Hartford is going to be better than Wade at this point.

Larry Brooks mentions changes on D, and that Torts wasn't happy with Redden's play.

Now why's that?

Redden looks like he's only interested in collecting a paycheck.

That he's still going to do, no loss to him

It's not like players like Ovechkin are going to demand an NMC since the thought of demoting a player who works so hard would never even enter a GM's mind. Not to mention any hardworking player worth his contract would be claimed off waivers.

The only time a player/agent would demand an NMC is if they know they're not worth their contract, in which case, why risk demanding that clause? The agent's goal is to get the player the most money, he still gets the money regardless of where he's playing, and no good player gets demoted.

Okay, but, Garrioch doesn't cite any sources. "There has been talk" is vague and typical. You know what? There is always "talk". This is no different. Vacuous tripe.

No I agree with you that Garrioch is pulling things out of his ass, it's just that it has been discussed before. It's clearly obvious that he is just saying things for more views. Simple common sense, Redden has a bad contract, and Kovalchuk is getting ready to hit the open market. If he writes something saying that Redden is getting sent down it wouldn't seem that far fetched to the common non-Ranger fan.

Garrioch makes stuff up all the time, which is what really leads me to believe that this isn't true at all.

it's true, they can't do it. Bottom line is they would have to eat half the price unless they want to acquire something like Jeff Finger and Jason Blake for him. It's either crap for crap or a 3.25 cap hit on re-entry

Honestly is that bad if they say lose Redden on Re-entry and play the heck out of the kids for the next few yrs?. ,DZ. Gilroy, McD,Sangs...........they can all be paid cheap till the cap hit is gone. I figure Girardi is gone due to the cap as he will be due a raise and Staal is going no where

to be honest

Its not a smart move in the long run.... imo[/QUOTE]

They would not eat a 3.25 cap hit on re-entry if they were actually to demote him.

If he were demoted that's the end of his career in the NHL, and the rangers would eat the salary.

No way. He'd be traded before he got sent down.
