If they do this I would imagine that Kovi would be part of (if not THE) the reason.
Can't imgine them pulling this kind of trigger just to have the "space"... Slats would be spending it.
We don't have the cap space to make any trades really.
The only other candidates to go down/get waived for cap space are Gilroy and Voros. Voros, IMO, is not going to get waived this season. I don't think sending Gilroy down is the right move or message right now.
I do however think this is just pure speculation and that Redden isn't going anywhere for the time being.
I disagree. They make this move soon because we are getting closer to the deadline when trades are actually made. Nothing was ever going to happen in December. Rangers are handcuffed from improving the team with Rozy's and Redden's salaries at the deadline and in the summer. They need to get the hell off the team.
The Rangers have plenty of time to prepare for the 2010-11 season. The Rangers can be 10% over the 10-11 cap from July 1 to the start of the season. They have to be in compliance by the day before the season starts.
Trades are made during the summer. That is when teams can make trades. At the trading deadline, teams tweak their rosters. Besides Brad Richards in 2008,which big contracts have been moved at the trading deadline? Teams don't have much space or can't create space to add major money at the deadline.
i'm thinking there will eventually be another round of amnesty buyouts in the next year or two.
Why would there be amnesty buyouts with the cap increasing next season? The Canadian dollar is 97 cents. Bettman said if that currency was at 94-95 cents, the cap would increase by about $1 million or so.
The NHL never had amnesty buyouts. They had compliance buyouts in 2005.
I doubt this is going to happen. Here's what management might be thinking however. Remember when he got benched? He freaked out, got into a yelling fight with Torts. That tells me he's a very proud guy. Maybe they're thinking if they send him to Hartford he would retire (removing his contract from the books), as he is too proud to play in the AHL. That would be awesome. One can always dream...
This is the real world. People don't walk away from 30 million dollars guaranteed over pride. I'd go play hockey in Afghanistan wearing a Salman Rushdie jersey for that kind of money.

Awesome just freaking awesome post I really needed that laugh
He had a decent game last game and was pretty good against Atlanta. Before that, he's been terrible since his injury. I don't know what to think of the guy this year. Started off the year great. Got injured and played like absolute ass. Maybe he's finally healed and we'll see more solid D from the guy, but who really knows?
Why don't you ask Jonathon what the team's record is since he changed it?
I wish she loved me the way I love her
It's Daisy Lowe. British model and Gavin Rossdale's lovechild.
And yes. Our record has been fantastic. I don't get it. Daisy doesn't love me, but she loves the Rangers.

Being sent down to the minors is most likely not the end of Redden's NHL career, it's certainly the end of playing with the Rangers though.
If it happened, it would be the end of his career.
He's not getting picked up off waivers, and the rangers aren't gonna eat the cap hit with a buy out or reentry waivers. He will stay down there forever.
...and collect his millions. Must be nice to suck and make so much frickin' money. What a joke. This signing will be cited for years and years for being so dumb.

Are you kidding me? It's already being cited as one of the dumbest NHL contracts.
There's nothing much we can do to make it worse (other then offer an extension)
Redden looks like he's only interested in collecting a paycheck.
That he's still going to do, no loss to him
It's not like players like Ovechkin are going to demand an NMC since the thought of demoting a player who works so hard would never even enter a GM's mind. Not to mention any hardworking player worth his contract would be claimed off waivers.
The only time a player/agent would demand an NMC is if they know they're not worth their contract, in which case, why risk demanding that clause? The agent's goal is to get the player the most money, he still gets the money regardless of where he's playing, and no good player gets demoted.
If only it was that easy....
This is a sport...a business and a livelihood. They are players to us, but husbands and fathers to others. 6 mill year to play with kids in Hartford is VERY far down on the list of life goals of the quality free agents and their families considering where to sign that next contract.
Wade Redden gets sent to Hartford after being AVERAGE. Agents, players and their families will take notice.
If this was your business and you were considering re-locating your family for new job, wouldn't you? Take note of what happened to guy who's job you're taking?

The Rangers are not putting $6.5 million in Hartford for 4 years. Especially considering Redden is not going to be the same way Rissmiller or Kaspar was, he's GOING to cause problems in Hartford. Hell, he became a problem after a game as a healthy scratch.
The Rangers only true option is a buyout or re-entry waivers, and I even doubt anyone would take him on re-entry waivers as $3.25/4 years is not a contract any team would give him IMO.
The buyout is only more than $2mil per for 2 years. They're just going to have to suck it up. It's going to hurt our reputation if we just bury a vet that we gave a hueg contract to in the minors. Hell, we've already done this with Rissmiller, and while Kaspar had a pre-lockout contract we did the same with him.
Here's a question - what happens if Redden does get sent to Hartford, stays there the rest of the season, then gets traded in the offseason? What are the Cap implications?
What about if he is sent down and then traded this season?

He's not going to Hartford. But... He would have to clear waivers... if someone was going to trade for him, they may rather the Rangers pay half that load off waivers...

with sather's record of "trades" and "signing free agents", that does not sound as bad as you'd think
rangers will send him to hartford, then give him permission to go play elsewhere (SEL, KHL, etc). They can also ask him to completely waive his NTC and we can ship him off to a team that might actually take him (ie team that needs to hit cap floor or needs a vet defenseman or needs a 3rd round pick that we can add)

There are other options out there those teams would rather have than Redden.
Redden has a family and kids, you really think he's going to go play overseas for a few years to round out his career? He's going to want to play in the NHL. I doubt he's going to retire. A buyout has to happen.
That being said he would rather play in the A than SEL or the KHL I'm sure.
A 3rd round pick for Redden if he made $1mil a year would be overpaying.
