To Buffalo: Tom Gilbert, Robert Nilsson and Jordan Eberle
To Edmonton: Thomas Vanek
Salaries are pretty close, Vanek is struggling this season, the Oilers actually signed him to his current contract and would still love to see him paired with Hemsky on the top line for next season and years to come. Buffalo could use a guy like Gilbert on their blue-line which isn't overly deep whereas we can afford to deal from a position of strength, plus Gilbert is American. Nilsson is a throw-in/salary dump with potential. Eberle is the kicker, if he reaches his ceiling he could equal or exceed Vanek's proven output (40 goals, 80 points) but Eberle's trade value will never be higher than it is now whereas Vanek may come cheaper than ever.
PS = Perhaps Buffalo would be more interested in Moreau/Pisani than Nilsson and they could have their pick of the three...
Buffalo doesn't even think about this trade, nothing there helps their current situation. Sure they need a puck moving d-man, but Gilbert isn't playing anywhere near his A game and Buffalo is one of the top teams in the East. Trading Vanek for potential players does nothing to help them this year.
