Pens scouting Ponikarovsky

http://hockeyindependent.com/blog/?p=9572

Saw this on the main boards. Interesting indeed. is this what Malkin needs? hes 29 years old, and is a UFA at the end of the season.

Ugh. It's a TIOPS rumor. So, that's like, minus five points against it already.

While I don't doubt Shero's been asking around about possible wingers for Geno, Ponikarovsky isn't exactly the elite top-6 winger we've been dying for. It'd have to depend on what Burke wants for him, whether or not we could/want to resign him, and how much we're willing to allocate to him next year if we're gonna sign him.

All signs point to "no", but who knows?

Poni's going to want Kunitz money. At least 3 million.

Poni is a decent player, hope we don't go for him though, unless he would come cheap which I doubt. The cap hit would be manageable as hes just over $1.5 mil, and that number gets cut significantly at the deadline. It may just be me but nothing really interests me when it comes to the Leafs and trading for their players. On a positive note he is Ukrainian

I'd gladly let him walk at that. Kunitz is twice the physical force and two way hockey player, and he and Ponikarovsky are just about as streaky.

They're probably scouting Nik Kulemin, not The Pony

Good luck with that, I don't see Kulemin going any where. I can almost guarantee it, unless you guys severely overpay.

I'd rather have Hagman but Poni is still a better top-6 winger than Dupuis, Talbot and Feds right now. Still I wouldn't giver much for a rental like him. But at the right price, why not?

I do not doubt for a minute that they are scouting Poni, and have inquired to Burke about him. Problem is, they're undoubtedly scouting and inquiring about 12-15 other 'rentals' around the league. Not really a rumor, just an educated guess.

Shero and company are just doing their homework and due diligence in preparation for the deadline, nothing more.

To be fair though, most anyone who's not named Craig Adams fits that description right about now.

Ponikarovsky is a whole lot of meh for me.

He's not a shooter. He's another one of those complementary forwards (Kunitz, Fedotenko, Malone, Dupuis, Cooke, Talbot, Armstrong, etc. etc.) that we seem to have in large supply of all the time.

I fear that Brian Burke is on the hunt for first round picks this particular trading season, so I'd rather stay clear of his players.

Kulemin is probably what we call an untouchable. Anybody else though, take them. Poni, Hagman, whoever. Take em all.

That Burke is loking for 1st rd picks (which he most certainly is) doesn't mean he'll get such a return for Poni. I don't know any GM who would give that much for him, especially since he's going to be a UFA next summer.

We need a trigger-man - a guy who's first instinct is to SHOOT the puck over and over again. Ponikaovsky isn't that guy.

He's a 20g,20a guy - which we already have plenty of. I know he put up like 60+ points last season, but I think that was an abberation.

I think he's an average top-6 winger, but not the type you want to bank a stanley cup playoff run off. Def not worth a 1st rounder. Burke is trying to trade him while his value is still high and especially since he'll be a UFA next year.

Shero needs to tread very lightly on this one

If you think Ponikarovsky isn't good enough I don't know who this board is expecting? With no cap room and without wanting to lose Caputi or Tangrandi I don't know who you guys expect to get?

The guy is cheap winger in the prime of his career who is making very reasonable money and has had 3 about to be 4 20 goal seasons. This is the ideal kind of guy Shero will be looking at and I think some people need to let go of the Kolvachuk dreams.

Yeah no way he is worth a late 1st. Maybe 2nd or 3rd and a 2nd tier prospect.

A right-handed winger who is signed for a solid cap hit for a number of seasons.

If you anything more your talking good prospects and a 1st rounder at least. Plus there is no cap room for any player above that level.

Who are you going to trade to get that guy? Staal, Letang, Tangradi, a 1st round pick and then some? Then were are you going to get the cap space? Letting Gonchar walk?

Tkachuk or Brunette would be nice.

Brunette would be nice at 2.3 for two more years but is he even available? I think a guy like Tkachuk might take a bit more to get for a playoff run. I'm thinking at least a 1st rounder for a rental.

If we make a move in April.. we only absorb a fraction of the cap hit.
