They have always been willing to trade and are one of the few teams that have had deep enough pockets to be mentioned with high profile players.

this.
i miss hatch and his strange ability to dangle around people in slow motion, but no one ever saw it coming because... it's derian hatcher.
we need to make hatch a developomental guy or a defense coach.

I'll take Phaneuf.

After tonight's defensive horror film, we need all the help we can get.

Truth. If only we could have held them to 1 or 2 goals we would have... err... lost.

Yeah, I really miss the Smith/Hatcher presence. Hell, even Knuble was probably in that mold. Decent players that weren't world class but contributed immensely with team chemistry and leadership. I think the team could really use a vet like that to help further gel the lockerroom.

Wow, I agree with you. Would still do hartnell and coburn for dion though I think.

I'm sure Mr. Shafer will rest easy tonight knowing you agree with him. You are a hockey genius in the purest sense of the phrase, NWO.

Timmonen 6.33M
Pronger 6.25M (4.92M next year)

Phaneuf 6.5M

So, basically we would be completely screwed against the cap at that point, with 3 D adding up to ~19.5M this year, and ~18M after that.

Assuming Homer keeps his job. 95% chance we're going to at least try and deal for Phaneuf.

I like this, dunno why, but Phaneuf seems more attractive to me than Coburn, mainly because Coburn couldnt hit the boradside of a barn, Dion makes contact occasionally, and a partner like Timonen would be as good for him as Pronger has been for Carle, and having pronger to work with in practice couldnt hurt. Hartnell dumps salary, and gives JvR a legit shot to show his potential in the top 6 and on the PP. Bourque, Glencross, or Dawes all eat up bottom tier minutes and wouldnt hurt the team.

and lose around 7 mil of worthlessness. I like the ROI here. Hartnell is not playing like a 4 milliopn dollar foward and Coburn is gonna want more than hes worth, which at his pace is 1.5 or less, to me.

Except you then need to replace a top 6 forward on this team (who does, even when he's not filling up the stat sheet) do a lot for this team offensively. So really, at best, you're losing 6M because of the roster spot your going to have to fill (that's best case scenario based on putting JVR in Hartnell's spot and finding another 3rd liner).

EDIT: All of this ignoring the fact that we're going to need to figure out how to pay for a goalie as is.

The best goaltending is an expensive defense?

... that doesn't seem right.

Then trade them for picks and try to mend our cap situation. That way when JVR comes knocking and Giroux and Emery and whoever else needs to be signed, we can get it done. Betts seems like a good guy to keep around as well. Dion's by no means playing like a 6.5 million dollar player right now.
