Rangers Prospect Poll: #11

Ok, and now we have our "Top Prospects". I gave it an extra day of voting for the last round of Top Prospects to make sure everyone had a chance to vote for their guy to be in the Top Prospects.

And the winner is: Chad Johnson.

For the second time in a row, the winner did not get the majority of the vote, finishing with just a third.

The vote for the prospect to be added to the poll was also very close:
(Based on the HF guidelines of who's a prospect: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/whatmakesaprospect)

Byers: 9
Kundratek: 7
Kveton: 3

Don't forget to vote who should be added this round and mention why you are voting for the guy you are voting for.

TOP PROSPECTS

1. D Michael Del Zotto
2. C Artem Anisimov
3. LW Evgeny Grachev
4. C Derek Stepan
5. D Bobby Sanguinetti
6. D Ryan McDonagh
7. LW Chris Kreider
8. D Matt Gilroy
9. C Ethan Werek

10. CHAD JOHNSON

The only player who made the top 10 this time, but not last July is Chad Johnson who was not even in the top-20 at the time.

Once again Sauer. Add Kundratek

It says a lot for the optimism of posters that players like Stepan who haven't tasted pro hockey are getting voted in above Sauer and Gilroy.

Voted for Hagelin again. He's the only one on the list who can possibly be a top-6 forward or a top-3 defenseman. Fact is that it's the top half of the team that is most important because you can always get role players and goons. Guys like Byers don't excite me. Bourque may have a chance to become a second liner some day, but I think Hagelin has a much better chance than Bourque does.

Heikkinen. I think he and Sauer are just about even but somehow I don't think Sauer is someone who Tortorella really likes. Add Valentenko.

While I agree that Hagelin seems to have a decent shot at being a solid contributor (I've admittedly never seen him play, but by all accounts he has some talent), Mike Sauer is big, hard-nosed, and has been a solid pro defenseman for some time now.

Not that excited about Dupont anymore. He didn't improve this year from his rookie season. Seems like a future 4th line banger at best.

Yeah, at this point that is the best we are going to get though. Kundratek? Maggio? Horak? Campbell? All in the same boat IMO.

Much as I like Hagelin, Sauer and Heikkinen have to come before him. He's got great upside (potentially top 6), but IMO the other two could potentially be 2nd pairing Dmen which is about the same level to me. And since I put them at about equal upside, the tie breaker goes to the guys who have already gotten some NHL games under their belts. Sauer, Beer, THEN Hagelin.

Add Kveton. He wasn't even in my top 20 when we did the first poll, but with the reports from our Czech posters that after a down first half he's now back on pace with the development he showed last year, he gets added here. Horak goes next.

The 24 year old one year UFA signing out of Europe is beating out a recent second round pick.

Yeah, that's also been my reservation on Beer. That said, he's NHL-ready so he should be in there within the next couple of picks.

Slats should trade Rosie just to get Heineken a chance to play. He won't re-sign with us otherwise.

And if you back, I wrote I was pretty confident that he'd one day be a starter in the NHL. Not getting ahead of myself here, he's far from being a starter, but he does show the potential to be.

Going with Hagelin here, oozing with potential.

I must say, we got much more excitement over some players (DZ, Step, Kreider), but the level of excitement about a bunch of others is way down.

Williams, Potter, Dowzak, Campbell, Zaborsky, Zaba, Wiikman were all regarded as prospects of one level or another. That's 7 guys right there from July's top 35.

Boyle graduated, making it 8 out of 35.

Even guys like Kundratek, Byers, Dupont, Doyle and Owens are no longer anything worth getting excited over.

Meanwhile, Heineken hasn't yet made the team and is probably not going to return. Gilroy made the team, but is playing worse than expected.

We have more quality on top now, but less quantity. Our top-7 looks better today than it did in July, but from spot #8 on down, we are weaker.

To some degree it was expected for some, but that's an awful lot of guys to drop off the map in half a year.

Would be only fitting if Chad Johnson completely ***** the bed after we vote him into the top 10

Why should he? After a few rocky starts very early in the season, he's been absolutely tremendous.

He's in the top 5 in the AHL in GAA, save percentage and shutouts. His Hartford GAA is a goal and a quarter above Vally and Wiki, and more than 1.5 goals above Zaba. The save percentage gap is even more impressive.

That everyone else in Hartford is getting horrible stats makes Chad's even more impressive. He's not playing behind a great team where it's easy to succeed. His team is not good at all, leaving the goalies exposed.

I expect his stock to rise further in the July poll. I think we've got our backup for the next few years.

Yeah, but that doesn't make him immune to having a bad day I'm just saying it would be fitting. And then there will be lots of posters saying he will be a career minor-leaguer, just like he was a future franchise goalie after a good game
