BG should absolutely take a look at this. Keep Subban out of the deal and go from there.
We'd make the cap room for a guy like that. He is better than the brothers ever will be combined. We have enough on d here and in Hamilton to make almost anyone available. The brothers and Hamrlik would be a starting point I think.
You put him on a line with Plex and Cammi, watch the inferno blaze.
Renting Kovalchuk is only good if we have a good shot at winning the Stanley Cup, which we don't even with him.
Thats what i was thinking. Why would Gainey go for a rental player only to TRY and make the playoffs. Whoever thinks that Kovalchuk would make us a contender is seriously mistaken. I love this team as much as the next guy but until we have some sense of consistency on all lines we arent going to contend for anything. We will obviously become better, but a contender ? Lets not get a ahead of ourselves.
That being said, depending on the price, I would do it in a heartbeat. Just to have Kovalchuk suit up as a hab and see what this team can do with him. Of course I would love for him to sign long term but thats going to depend on how he meshes with the team, which in my opinion is no guarantee.
Darth Joker's post makes alot of sense, with or without Kovalchuk long term.
By the sounds of it, it sounds as if the Habs are hesitating aquiring Kovalchuk because of Halak.... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH A!!
Not that he has ANY credibility but this has entered into the realm of the absurd.
Can someone please tell me why Eklund is considered a "reliable" source on this board? My imagination is far more accurate and more likey to happen the 90% of his rumors.

We pretty much all know why Eklund rumors are allowed on this board. As soon as someone mentions the reason, the mods quickly delete the post. I'm not blaming them though, they're just enforcing the rules.

Sounds like "Big Brother" is looking over us.
I havne't seen it before getting deleted so if you want to IM me to let me know why, feel free to. Unless they choose to silence you for talking
I think people really overestimate the trade value of rentals.
1 or 2 roster players + draft pick and/or prospect should be enough judgeing by what a similar high profile winger (Hossa) got a couple of years ago.
If Atlanta wants a long term goaltending solution, Halak could easily be the main part of that trade. All this depends on what other bidders do as well.
Pavelec is only 22 years old and is 2-0-1, 1.97, .937 in his last three games...I think they have their long term goalie already.
Halak isn't good enough to be a centre piece for a trade for a 50 goal scorer.
Terrible idea. We'll have trouble re-signing Plekanec, we can't possibly sign Kovalchuk who's going to ask 10m/yr. Since Plekanec is not enough to bring Kovalchuk we'll need to add A LOT of assets, probably young players with little or no cap hit.
In the end we will lose :
-Plekanec, who we are very likely to re-sign
-Draft picks (probably)
-Young players (definitely)
-A vet to make Kovalchuk fit on the cap temporarily
for :
-a few weeks of Kovalchuk who's going to have no support because we'll gut our depth to get him
why in the world would Atlanta have any interest in Halak?
i don't think there is much of a chance that we will be in on the Kovalchuk sweepstakes. We don't have the cap space to re-sign him, and it wouldn't make sense to give up several assets for a rental given the roster we currently have.
we dont really need the first because we havent drafted anyone that great in the 1st rounder since carey price ... and Kovulchuk can make this team so much better
