To Islanders: Ilya Kovalchuk
Todd White

To Thrashers: 2010 1st round draft pick
2011 1st round draft pick
Calvin Da Haan
Travis Hamonic
Kirill Petrov

Isles get their man they need and a good veteran who had 73 points last year to replace jon sim in the lineup. Also Thrashers get good core of young players to go with Kane and Little for their future as well as the two 1st's.

so you are trading potentially a top 5 pick, two top D prospects, one being Hamonic who looked golden in the WJC, and a mid level prospect for an unsigned FA who wants to play in buildings that are full....

todd white at 2.4 million is too much money. NYI need defense, why trade two solid prospects away? let tavares okposo develop, NYI will have a solid offence is a couple years

We're not trading our 3 best prospects plus 2 first round picks during a rebuild for an expensive rental and a plug.

Take out one of the 1sts, Hamonic, and White and the Isles will consider.

The Thrashers want NHL ready forwards and forward propsects(and not ones who might feel more comfortable in Russia), the Isles do not have any to spare.

The Thrashers would not do a deal like this, and I don't see the Islanders having what the Thrashers would want in a Ilya trade.

the thrasher want nhl ready offense back in a trade for kovalchuk so instead we get a bunch of defensive prospects and picks.

atlanta says no, and new york probably doesn't propose the trade in the first place

Annnnnd Garth Snow cracks up laughing.

Like they have to trade away three of their toprated prospects and not 1 but 2 first round picks, just for the privlige of replacing Jon Sim in the lineup? Oh and a rental- that changes everything!

Not trying to be condecending..... but do you realy think ATL can pull a better deal than this? A teams top 3 prospects on top of it's next two 1st rounders?

The Isles would be better off signing Niklas Hjalmarsson to an offer sheet and just losing the four 1st rounders.

We can just move Enstrom, Valabik, and Bogosian to F I guess, forget about if the Thrashers have any good D prospects.

The trade has great value, but it does nothing to address any of the Thrashers needs right now or in the future. It also pretty much kills any chance of the Thrashers making the playoffs this season.

I also would not hold my breath on any Russian coming over to the NHL unless they make the jump to the Canadian juniors first.

If Kovy were to resign before the deal, it's a reluctant yes for the Iles I think.

Atlanta should fax that in before Snow's prescription meds wear off!

Atlanta may need offence and a couple dmen now, but a major shakeup is needed down there. Fire Wadell, make this deal and in 4 years this team is golden...in Quebec City!

seriously 1 or 2 possible top 5 picks, 2 top prospects...that's an offer that would be very tough to beat.

Also, would it make any difference if the thrashers make the playoffs this year?, they'd be a 7-8 seed and likely would be swept again

No, No and No.

What makes you believe the Islanders dont want a core of young players to go with Okposo, Tavares, and Bailey? ESPECIALLY since those are three forwards. Dont you think the Islanders need some solid, young defenseman? I do.

There is a reason you want Hamonic and De Haan. Believe me, I understand. But Garth Snow has said that they will not be deviating from the plan. The Islanders are not going to making any trades like this.

I would add—the first round picks are hugely important to the Islanders—who, despite recent success and a shot at this years playoffs are also REBUILDING. Petrov could also be huge.

Trading De Haan is insanity. We traded up TWICE to draft De Haan—now, less then a year after expending all of those draft picks to move up to get OUR guy, we dump him? Where is the logic? Who do you think is our GM? Mike Milbury

Sorry—you will have to find another team. The best trade partner in my mind is Boston. They have a couple of first round picks from the Kessel deal. Work a proposal with them.

No need for the Islanders to offer ANYTHING to get Kovalchuck. We have the cap space to sign him next year—and while the past indicates free agents don't sign here, that might be true. But we have the cap space, and a core of very good players coming in that could entice Kovy.

The Isles MUST NOT make the same mistake they made in 2000. They had the makings of a championship caliber team for years to come had they not made the Yashin and Peca deals and remained focused on building with Chara, Brewer, McCabe, Connolly, Bertuzzi, Luongo, Jokenin and then using the picks to draft Heatley and Spezza.

This team has lots of parallels to a few Isles teams. the 74-75 Isles sneek into the playoffs and the beginnings of their greatness is shown. This team could sneek into the playoffs and be interesting. This team also reminds me a bit of the 1999 team. There are flashes of what is to come. Messing that up would be a DISASTER for a franchise that needs a sure, steady rebuild and right now, Snow is doing this right.

any prospects coming back in a kovalchuk trade need to be offensive because that is where we don't have much depth in the system. kozlov is retiring after this year and with no kovalchuk afinogenov and possibly armstrong don't re-sign here, that's 4 of your top 9 wingers gone. atlanta needs one good nhl winger back in a trade for kovalchuk and more winger prospects.

just because that package may be more valuable than kovalchuk doesn't mean it makes any sense at all for the thrashers to do it. there is no reason at all to trade for something you already have.

i don't want you to. islanders are a horrible trading partner because they don't have any expendable offense or good offensive prospects to trade and even with kovalchuk probably aren't going to do anything in the playoffs so they have no reason to trade for him.

but the trade does nothing to address any of atlanta's needs right now or next year or the year after
