should we trade visnovsky instead of souray

since souray isn't having a great season well probably get a much greater return for visnovsky.

Absolutely not. Keep Lubo over Souray. Smid is becoming a better defenseman as a result of Lubo. Souray was the one that said he's waive his NMC if it helps the team get better. Lubo isn't as injury-prone as Souray.

I have become a big supporter of Lubor and can see why he got his contract from LA

from my perspective I think that Lubor brings more to the table then Souray--I think he he a better all around D man then Souray and he can be the guy the oilers build a d around

They both are getting up there in age though. I'd keep Vis too.

I'd keep Vish.

Souray looks pretty disinterested and unmotivated these days.

He needs a change. And the Oilers could use the cap relief.

Doesn't matter what we "get" for them.

We deal Visnovsky we "get" a giant hole on D. Not so much with Souray.

I dont agree with that. Im all for trading Souray, but he's the only one on the Oilers who can slow down the play from the backend or provide a real physical presence in our own zone.

I would trade both of them. Neither are going to get any better, and at this point we should trade them and get as much as we can for them

I think Souray has a built up enough of a reputation that he won't be passed on due to a poor stat line after coming back from an injury. Most teams know what he brings as long he doesn't show any nagging concerns from the injury there shouldn't be much hesitation in making an offer for him if the team feels they could use him and it works cap wise.

Actually I think our present situation mirrors the situation Toronto had when they were choosing between Kaberle and McCabe.

Yeah, he's done a bang-up job at that.

I honestly don't think we'd miss it. I mean, we DO miss it even with him here, so what's the point.

Visnovsky is the one who gets the puck going the other way. Without him, everyone struggles worse.

Cap space

I'd try for Teubert outta LA, but the rail gain is cap space.

I've never really been sold on trading Souray... however I'm ESPECIALLY not sold on trading Visnovsky. That would be a very bad idea. I am slowly warming up to the idea of trading Souray. But yah, definitely not Visnovsky. He's a big part in Smid's good season. Same can be said with Grebeshkov, when he was playing good. Visnovsky makes players better. He's a difference maker. Even in a rebuild, guys like him are needed. They need those mentors/leaders. He continues to impress and has been huge for us this year.

How about

Phoenix
Sheldon Souray (UFA 2012)
Fernando Pisani (UFA 2010)
4th round pick in 2010

Edmonton
Vernon Fiddler (UFA 2011)
Chris Summers (NCAA)

Not unless we plan on keeping the dive going for Larsson. Which is what we should do btw.

I would be down but I dont know if the Kings would do it. That is exactly the type of player we need. (Besides a top tier forward, which we hopefully get in the draft, and a blue chip goalie)

trade him

Principle number one sell high buy cheap. We are now rebuilding mode which means Lubo should go if the return is 1st round pick, established young forward with size or another 1st round pick and prospect/2nd round pick.

I don't disagree, but we would need some young stud defenseman capable of stepping into the roles then shed by those two. Smid is our best young defenseman by far and the other four, Gilbert, Grebeshkov, Chorney, and Peckham are adequate, but sometimes unreliable. I think that we need a couple of young defenseman who are a little higher pedigree than those four, and who also have more of an edge to their game than three of those four.

Id love to get Teubert, but they arent going to deal him for Souray unless we are also sending back some young talent. Lombardi really liked Cogs - Id think he would be still interested. Souray and Cogs for Teubert + is more likely.

Vis brings way more to the table, like other posters say, he makes players around him better, he starts the puck moving in the right direction, and he has a better offensive side. Souray does have injury issues, and his grit in our end could be replaced for a lot less money. He seems to have lost his big shot, at least he misses the net a lot more than he used to, while Vis is able to sneak in for that quick shot or to pick up rebounds. I think Vis is the closest thing we have to a game breaking player right now, Hemsky included.

Without reading the comments I say trade both. Both are 33 and have most likely seen their best days. Both have value and would get us more then Grebs/Gilbert. Going into a rebuild phase I rather go with the younger Grebs and Gilbert and move the vets.

Bring in another Smid like players to replace Staios would be a start. Could always sign a vet in the summer to help fill out the roster something like we did with Strudwick but try get someoen that can play the PK and shutdown role.
