LaRaque was just bought out by the habs making him a free agent. It's too bad that he's still hasn't recovered from his back injury as I would love to have this guy. I've always thought he had decent offensive skills when he played in edmonton.

Honestly, I would rather have Whitney, Souray and Moreau/Torres than Kovalchuk....

Laraque has 2 herniated disks...Daze had one and retired...he is pretty much over fighting and barely even gets in scrums now....

Whitney makes the most sense and could be had for cheap because he's probably going to re-sign in Carolina. I'd love to get TK back as a throw in....

Smyth-Kopitar-Simmonds
Frolov-Handzus-Brown
Whitney-Stoll-Richardson/Moller
Parse-Moller/Richardson-TK

Whitney would be great.

But Torres would be even better.

Why?
Are the Kings more in need of a bottom-6 than a top-6 forward?

Torres is far from a bottom 6. Torres is the type of player that can easily play any top 3 lines. Plus he can throw his body around as well as his fists.

To date, these are their respective numbers:

Torres: 16 goals, 9 assists

Whitney: 15 goals 19 assists

I don't think we have to discuss Kovalchuk here.

As long as Terry Murray is the head coach, Kovalchuk woul rather join
the Burger King company team than the Kings.

We have to stop that boardwrestling and wrap around crap very soon or we will lose key players as soon as they hit the UFA status.

Just take Fro as an example

The big man McKenzie has weighed in on the Kovalchuk talks, says the Kings are out of it because they can't offer any names for Kovy:

Quote:
There is no question in my mind that the Atlanta Thrashers are going to trade Ilya Kovalchuk and I believe that the sweepstakes for the star sniper is unofficially on.

That being said, Thrashers' general manager Don Waddell is not in a position that he can go out and make a deal for future considerations such as the Toronto Maple Leafs pick that belongs to the Boston Bruins. He will not be able to go back and sell that idea to his market right now. He won't be able to sell the idea of a bunch of kids from the Los Angeles Kings like Thomas Hickey and Colten Teubert as the return that he gets on Kovalchuk. If he is going to make a move, it is going to have to be for bigger name players.

The Calgary Flames are a team that may, and I stress MAY, be interested, however if they are they are going to have to talk about some of the “big boys” like Dion Phaneuf amongst others to be included.

If it's not Phaneuf then there is a good chance that the Chicago Blackhawks will be interested. I'm not saying that talks have been made, but I am saying that guys like Patrick Sharp or Cam Barker or David Bolland will be in the mix. Legitimate bonafide NHL players is what Waddell is looking for in return, and he is looking for a couple of them.

I think that at the end of the day both Chicago and Calgary will be in that group to pursue Kovalchuk and pursue him hard.

i don't disagree, but i think that is ultimately a bad move for the Thrashers.

big names aren't going to build that team... we KNOW that.

I would hope Chicago lands Kovalchuk. Why? I think they can actually weaken their team by trading a player like Sharp, Versteeg or Bolland along with Barker and another throw in (say Byfuglien). They'll have Kovalchuk for a few months then lose him to free agency, just as it happened with Hossa in Pittsburgh.

Am I the only one who thinks Waddell is posturing when he says he won't let other gms talk with Kovy and his agent?

Throw Waddell a bone (pick) and let the talks commence, no?

If he can't resign Kovy, you'll see his demands lighten as each week goes by. He's just playing hardball right now and if he knows he's going to lose him no matter what, those young kids are going to look a lot better than letting Kovy walk

All GM's do the posturing thing.

Generally, whatever goes on behind closed doors is the exact opposite of what they say publicly.

I'll be convinced of where he's going when he goes there, Bob's (informed and informative) speculation aside.
