Detroit wants Jason Spezza!

What would it take to get him since Detroit needs a center and Ottawa has so many centermen. I know Detroit would have to overpay a lot for him, but how about the below deal?

To Detroit: C Jason Spezza, D Brian Pothier.

To Ottawa: D Jiri Fischer, C Jiri Hudler, 1st rounder 04, 1st rounder 05, C Tomas Kopecky, LW Boyd Devereaux (or C Jason Williams).

I actually thought that was a fair deal for Spezza if the senators wanted to deal him

It's a massive quantity for quality deal, which Ottawa can't afford to make right now. It's too many little pieces.

If Ottawa was to trade Spezza (big IF), then this is precisely the opposite of the type of trade we would make. We would go the other way, and look for a player or players that would provide a great impact immediately, giving us a boost for a deep playoff run.

but value wise, you must admit that it's decent return, especially if you consider the loopsided proposals that are made on these boards

Sure,

But if Ottawa came out and said that they were willing to trade Spezza, there would be 28 other offers, and this one wouldn't get the job done.

Ottawa: Needs #1/2 LW - doesn't need #2/3, #3,#4,#5 LW, any C (we have lots, all sorts of sizes and shapes, so sorry Comrie, Hudler, Kopecky, Jason Williams), any RWs (Havlat will sign at some point), any D, any G, any draft picks, and cannot accept more players than they give up. Unlikely to give any D, any RWs, and LWs, will give C, prospects and draft picks. Generally content with team, and will play excess C at LW at this point.

So trade proposal gives up future star Spezza while doesn't solve primary need area, #1 LW, provides quantity for quality which hinders instead of helps, and provides draft picks we don't need for this year's Cup run.

"Ottawa has so many centermen" - so why do you propose even more coming back?

anyways, Spezza is not going anywhere as I know you guys are very high on him, as you should be. Unless he is involved in some sort of scandal, Ottawa will never publicly come out and say that they would be willing to trade Spezza.

looking back to that Yashin trade, you guys sure ripped off NYI badly...

The Sens depth at centre is a double edged sword type of thing. Each centremen they have could play on any other team in the league which makes them look attractive. The problem is return. The Sens are too good to make any reasonable deal other then for prospects. Theyre stacked at D and have one of the better Goalies in the league. Personally , i think the Sens will represent the East in the final, and will probably win the Cup as well. Any trade the Sens make for a current NHLer would simply create a glut at another position.

I"m pretty sure that if the Sens had to move a center that every single one of them would be moved before Spezza got moved. Not unless it's so one-sided it's not even funny.

If Detroit wants the likes of Spezza they better start with the likes of Zetterberg and (Hudler or Grigorenko (if healthy)).

But to be honest...neither one of those players has Spezza's size, skill and intangibles...

If the Wings need a centerman...have White or Smolinski...leave the others out of it

This is a more realistic proposal:

Spezza

for

Shanahan (+ detroit picks up most of his salary)
Grigorenko
1st in '04

This doesn't work for either team and it would be a huge change from Ottawa's philosophy, but that's probably what Ottawa would be looking for.

Please stop with these Havlat and Spezza proposals. They make no sense and have 0 chance of occuring. When was the last time an amazing young talent was traded away from a Presidents Trophy winning team?
