The only possible reason it makes any sense is in case of injuries suffered at the Olympics.
Sadly, I think it has more to do with the NHL wanting "its day" rather than any rational desire to be flexible with regard to injuries.

another name just popped up into my head. Dan Hamhuis. Very consistant guy. 27years old. makes 2M a year, and his contract is either up at the end of this season or next. not quite sure on that. 6'1 200lb

Hamhuis might be in the top 4 on this team. He's a really solid defenseman.

I've been on the Hamhuis bandwagon for a while now. That would be a great fit. Stick him with Timonen and Coburn with Parent or Bartulis.

...and he'd cost an arm and a leg to acquire. If the Flyers are looking at anyone from Nashville, the hope is that it's a guy like Klein. I doubt Weber or Suter or Franson or Hamhuis could be had.

The impressions I always get from Jackets fans is that Coumbus is looking for good defensemen, not looking to trade away their good defensemen.

One of the more underrated dmen in the league, imo. I'd love for Philly to get him.

Klein just signed an extension, doubt that he'd be moved so so afterward

Looking at guys that would fit the flyers cap and whose team may not be competing for a spot with them.

Hnidy, Leopold, Skartins, Boynton, Boullion, maybe Mara.

They probably can't afford anyone making more then $1MM - $1.25MM so that leaves you with guys like:

Hnidy, Bouliion, Alberts, Sydor.

Sean O'Donnell (1.25MM) would be a real nice addition but I doubt the Kings would move him.

Asham ($640M)+ OKT ($600M) for O'Donnell ($1.25MM)

Carle - Pronger
Coburn/O'Donnell - Kimmo
Coburn/O'Donnell - Parent

Hamhuis is an impending UFA. How sure is Nashville that they can bring him back?

Zbynek Michalek would be an excellent fit on our blueline. However, he's also one of the Coyotes' top defensemen and he won't come cheap either. He's got a real light cap hit, but he's a free agent at the end of the season. He'd need to be re-signed and depending on what Michalek gets, that could affect possibly re-signing Coburn. Michalek is a legitimate top 4 guy who's also coming into his prime. He hits the open market and I could very easily see some team giving him 4+ per year.

Sure enough that someone will pay something decent for him. There's always a sucker out there who is willing to overpay - look no further than our own GM who grossly overpaid for Pronger. Anaheim GM Bob Murray said that Holmgren was only competing with himself and that Murray was considering Holmgren's initial offer of Lupul and Sbisa and that Holmgren went over the top by offering the two first round picks. Nobody else had even made an offer to Murray with regards to Pronger.

Ive read that they are currently trying to sign him. I like the idea of Montador or Boynton.

And that's what scares me because he's shown a penchant for tossing draft picks like they're nothing and he's also shown that he's not afraid to toss top notch prospects as well.

If the rights to Bouwmeester went for a 3rd and Jordan Leopold (and that was at the draft), the stakes to acquire a player under contract during the season and at the trade deadline becomes a lot higher. I could see him giving away a first and a prospect like Marshall or Bourdon for a Hamhuis and then watch as Hamhuis leaves because there's no cap space to sign him.

I don't think Hamhuis is available, not with the Preds in the playoff race
