Kings @ Blue Jackets 4PM PST 1-28-09

Kings try to keep rolling as they visit Columbus

KINGS (30-19-3) AT BLUE JACKETS (21-25-9)

Last 10 -- Los Angeles 6-4-0; Columbus 5-5-0

"Season series -- This is the third of four regular-season meetings between the Kings and Blue Jackets. The teams have split the first two meetings, with each club winning at home.

Big story -- The Kings are trying to extend two winning streaks -- they've won three in a row overall and four consecutive games on the road. Columbus still resides near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, but is desperate to claw its way back into playoff contention after a rough month of December in which the Jackets only managed two wins. The Jackets helped themselves by beating Nashville 3-2 at home on Tuesday."

A little playoff update:

Los Angeles Kings Playoff Chances
Did not play Wednesday, playoff odds up 0.8 to 92.6%
63 points 30-19-3
http://www.sportsclubstats.com/NHL/W...fic/Kings.html

Detroit lost, St. Louis lost and the Ducks lost. All those helped the Kings. Flames lost in OT, which hurt the kings but only by
0.10%

If the Kings beat Columbus, their playoff odds will increase to 94.7%. If they lose - 89.8%. An OTL will barely affect the Kings at all.

Essentially, 34 points is the Kings target #. They need to earn 34 points out of the next 30 games to guarantee them 97 points and a playoff spot.

Looking at the schedule today. After this road trip we play 16 of 27 at home(2 of the road games are at the Ducks). Also we don't have a road trip longer than 2 games and we only have 3 back to backs for the rest of the season.

OT: The Lakings.com background wallpaper has changed now. It always used to be Brownie but now they rotate players.

The Caps-Ducks highlights from tonight are a must see.

We'll have to do better than the last homestand. Not that we did horribly, just that we need to set the tone and follow through on our own ice.

I just keep seeing Stoll to the left now. Brownie is still to the right. Are they rotating other players?
UPDATE: Ok for the first time I see a new BG: Kopi and Scuds.

All I kept thinking after watching those is Anaheim's D overall is a mess. That, and it's pretty amazing that the Kings D has no problem shutting that team down. Sure, it's only been a couple of times but both times the Kings have made the Caps look ordinary - when they're clearly anything but.

I wrote this on Hammond, but does anyone remember at the start of the season how everyone was comparing the Kings and the Blue Jackets. We were supposedly similar in make-up and skill, yet we've found a way to win where they haven't. My guess is that it's grinding out those one goal game wins. Or maybe TM has found a way to get more out of his players than Hitchcock.

I was at that game (I think they've only played the Caps once this season), and I agree,I don't know why, but they did make them look ordinary. I remember not really noticing Ovi. Credit the D for shutting him down. Maybe if you can contain Ovi, the rest of the team loses that drive to win? Could be a strategy the next time they meet (which would have to be next year or in the finals )

Still OT: I wonder if LAKings would let us have those backgrounds as wallpapers?

I live a few blocks from the BlueJackets arena and my buddy manages the pub right outside the front door, so obviously he sees many hockey players in the place. Yesterday a guy came in alone ordered a light beer and the beef stew and my buddy starts a conversation with him as bartenders do. After a question or two the guy offered up that he played for the Kings. It was Randy Jones. Said he was a really, really good guy. The rest of the team was going to the movies and he had already seen what they were seeing, so he stopped in for a few beers and lunch.

Jones told him he really likes the guys on the team and that he's pretty excited about the rest of the year. Said he loves LA and all his friends and family are wanting to visit much more than when he was in Philly. He's looking forward to the Bruins game because a whole bunch of people from home are coming down to watch the game. My buddy is actually from Boston and told him some nice places to go as well as the best steakhouse in Columbus.

Typical hockey player....nice...normal guy, no huge ego, down to earth and good tipper.
