I didn't realize he spoke zero english, you forget that part about many Russians when they come over.
Years ago, the Flyers got a Czech defector named Rudy Tacjnar (sp.). They were intrigued by him. Something like 30 years old. He was sent to the Maine Mariners (AHL) and spoke little or no English. The Flyers, through the University of Maine, found a translator but she spoke Czech and he Slovak. The two communicated that way and then she translated in English. The Flyers drafted Anton Stastny and then the person who helped Tacjnar defect was paid a healthy sum to get all three Stastnys to the Flyers (Peter and Marian). He promised. He was never heard from again. The Flyers tried litigation as I recall. The Stastnys then went to Quebec. Tacjnar couldn't play the game in the North American system. It led to the signing of Miro Dvorak who played on the Keenan teams.
