Phaneuf, Giguere traded to Leafs, part of two separate trades

Per Darren Dreger's twitter and TSN. Details to follow.

In the words of Pierre: MONSTAAAAAAAAAR

Really interested to see what goes back. Kaberle?

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Sunday that they have made a seven-player deal with Calgary, with Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf the centrepiece.

Forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, and Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White head to Calgary, with forward Fredrik Sjostrom and defensive prospect Keith Aulie also acquired by Toronto.

Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke announced the deal Sunday morning at the Air Canada Centre, just hours after Toronto lost its fifth consecutive game, squandering a three-goal lead in a 5-3 defeat to the visiting Vancouver Canucks.

Calgary has also been mired in a slump, winning on Saturday to snap a nine-game losing streak. Goals have been at a premium for the Flames, who rank near the bottom of the NHL in that category.

The Anaheim Ducks announced on Sunday that they have acquired left wing Jason Blake and goaltender Vesa Toskala from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for goaltender J.S. Giguere.

“J.S. is as classy and professional as they come,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “On behalf of the organization, we thank him for his tremendous contributions to the franchise both on and off the ice, not the least of which were two trips to the Stanley Cup Final and one championship. We wish him well in Toronto.”

Blake, 36 (9/2/73), appeared in 56 games this season with the Maple Leafs, collecting 10-16=26 points with 26 penalty minutes (PIM). In his third year in Toronto, Blake ranked second on the club in shots (170) and tied for second in game-winning goals (2). He also led Toronto and ranked tied for eighth in the NHL in takeaways (48).

Signed by Toronto as a free agent on July 1, 2007, Blake picked up 25-38=63 points with 40 PIM in 78 games with the Leafs last year. The Moorhead, MN native set a career high in assists while ranking first on the team in goals, points, game-winning goals (5) and shots (302). He also ranked seventh among league leaders in shots.

Originally signed as a free agent by Los Angeles on Apr. 17, 1999, Blake has appeared in 11 NHL seasons with the Kings, Islanders and Maple Leafs. Since making his NHL debut in 1998-99 with Los Angeles, Blake has scored 184-243=427 points with 398 PIM in 190 career games. He has appeared in 24 Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Islanders and Kings, recording 3-4=7 points with 19 PIM. Blake was also a member of Team USA at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy, going scoreless in six games.

Eff my fantasy team. At least in Calgary Phaneuf's shortcomings were kinda contained. Maybe he'll put up more points?

Personal viewpoint aside, why the hell does Toronto do this?

You are supposed to be able to watch the press conference here, but either LeafsTV is messed up or the conference has not started yet.

Phaneuf, Sjostrom, Aulie. Wth did they pay to get that?

Something tells me Toronto just screwed up big time.

Apparently Giggy is headed to the Leafs as well.

Stajan, White for Phaneuf, Sjostrom, Aulie

Sutter should be shot. Just when everyone hated Burke, the Leafs fans are going to be sucking his dick now.

Per ESPN:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4874486

Quote:
TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired veteran goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks, pending his approval, a source told ESPN.com.

As of 11:30 a.m. ET, Giguere had not yet waived his no-trade clause but a source close to the situation expected he would.

Goalie Vesa Toskala would be headed from Toronto to Anaheim as part of the deal and there may be other parts to this trade as well, the source said.

It's gotta be more than that. There absolutely has to be some prospects headed back to CGY.

Toronto: Picking up the overpaid garbage from throughout the league.

Too bad we can't trade them Jones anymore. I wonder if they're interested in OKT.

What prospects?? Kadri? They really are thin and have no first round pick this year or next.

Why? Phaneuf is an over rated, over paid cancer.

Yeah, which is bizarre. There are a couple decent guys in there though like Stalberg, Bozak, and Gunnarsson.

It's on LeafsTV now.

Just getting out from under Phanuef's contract makes this a win for Calgary in my book. Toronto's cap situation is going to be a hilarious mess in the offseason.

Last year, Calgary got Jokinen prior to the Flyers' game. Now this. An annual event.

Half their team is no longer under contract next season.

Leafs are trying to rebuild in a down year, much like us.

I really think this is a good deal for CGY.

They desperately need secondary scoring and they got a 25 goal guy in Hagman, a 50-60 point guy in Stajan, and a really underrated player in Ian White, 40 point pace playing 23 mins per night and is pretty good defensively.

Phaneuf had seriously regressed, Sjostrom is a throw-in, and Aulie is a bottom pairing prospect I believe.

hey im happy!! bunch of new pieces going to calgary the day before we play. jet lagged and no chemistry plus we dont have to worry about phaneuf crushing one of our smaller players.

all i can say is im happy with this!! torontos defense will be very solid if they ever mesh!
