Phaneuf had seriously regressed, Sjostrom is a throw-in, and Aulie is a bottom pairing prospect I believe.
Aulie is one of their better prospects.

God help me. Leafs fans will be more insufferable than they were yesterday.

You have to give Burke credit - the masses were starting to rumble, so he pulls a couple of huge deals to take himself off the hot seat.

And with these contracts they're picking up, they'll have like $8M to sign that half of the team. Six of their d-men will be signed at cap hits of ~$3M or more.

He's a defensive d-man with little to no offense, guys like that top out as No.4s in the new NHL IMO with a very few exceptions.

Stajan (2nd line), Hagman (2nd line), White (2nd pairing), Mayers (4th line) for Phaneuf (question mark), Aulie (okay prospect), Sjostrom (4th line).

I had read somewhere that he was one of their more highly regarded kids. Can't seem to recall where. I know he's a big nasty kid, though.

Did a trade involving Giguere and Toskala happen now or not?

Also, is it just me or is Iggy, JBo, Kipper all Calgary has got for themselves going into next season?

Well, for Phaneuf it's not much of a change. He's going from one toilet into the another. He was pretty much traded from the 3rd worst team in the league right now to the 2nd worst.

Do you think Burke practices in front of a mirror?

On a recent questionable call against the Flyers, I wrote here that the ref rehearsed that in front of the mirror in his hotel room.

Yeah, but realistically, how many big nasties turn into great NHL d-men nowadays? Sure you have an Orpik or a Mitchell every now and again, but the odds of Aulie developing into an above-average D are pretty small.

Someone explain to me why TO wins this, I don't get it. Phaneuf is pretty bad defensively and has a very overpriced deal and they gave up 3 really solid players. CGY gains those 3 guys and a lot of cap flexibility, why do they lose?

That trade is most likely the once referenced. In a holding pattern. Could be awaiting NHL approval for Cap reasons.

Reactionists are going to freak out because the Flames gave up a premier player, but it's not like he was traded for a bunch of hacks. Calgary lacked some serious depth up front, and with Hagman and Stajan they got some. White is also pretty low maitence, who needs to be re-signed but he is an RFA. Stajan is a UFA though.

Calgary is rumored to be going for Kovalchuk anyways, so this opens it up a little more.

Kessel ($5.40)
Blake ($4.00)
Bozak ($3.73)
Grabovski ($2.90)
Orr ($1.00)
Sjostrom ($0.75)
Rosehill ($0.51)
Kulemin (RFA)
Mitchell (RFA)

Phaneuf ($6.50)
Komisarek ($4.50)
Kaberle ($4.25)
Beauchemin ($3.80)
Finger ($3.50)
Schenn ($2.98)
Gunnarsson ($0.80)

Gigeure ($6.00)
Gustavsson (RFA)

Tucker - buyout ($1.00)

Total: 51.62 on 17 players with 3 RFAs

If the team is getting Gigeure, a defenseman has to be on the move. That's just way too much money.

Iginla, Langkow, Moss, Backlund, Glencross, Dawes, Hagman, JBo, Regher, Sarich, Giordano, Pardy, Kipper, and McElhinney are all signed for next year. Should have a nice chunk of cap space to sign anyone else they want to keep.

If everything stays the same, this is the Toronto team next year:

Phaneuf, Kaberle, Schenn*, Komisarek, Beauchemin, Finger

Cap Hit-25.525M

*-There is no bonus cushion next year so Schenn 2.975 is fully on the cap, as is Bozak.

Add on Giggy's 6M in goal, that leaves them 25.275M for 12 forwards if the cap stays the same, an average of about 2M/forward. Subtract the signed forwards from the 25.275M, that leaves them with 7.738M, then 1M for the Tucker buyout, 6.738M to bring in 6 forwards.

I don't think there's a clear winner. Maybe the Leafs deal Schenn in the next deal and Aulie is his "replacement".

Yeah, I mean, I don't think you want to have Schenn and Aulie both in your top-4 even if Aulie develops into a top-4 guy.

Obviously it's too early to declare a winner, but I like it better for CGY right now depending on what they do with resigning White and Stajan.

I'd say he's a cross between Cory Sarich and Robyn Regher. He's a big, strong, physical and nasty spirited defenseman, but he can really skate and can move the puck if given the opportunity.

As for defensive d-men with little to no offense, there's certain room for them in the top four in the NHL. They allow the offensive minded guys to roam and can cover up for them if need be.

As for Toronto's D, it's clear that Burke is still going to move a few more guys. Aulie, Schenn, Phaneuf, Beauchemin, Komisarek, Kaberle, Gunnarson, Finger, Exelby.....9 defensemen for six spots. There's probably 25 million tied up in defense alone. Yep, at least two are getting moved. Finger will be gone and you can bet that the Kaberle sweepstakes will soon start.

The trade deadline just got a whole lot more interesting this year....

No way do they deal Schenn. Schenn, Aulie, Phaneuf, and Gunnarson will become the new top four in Toronto. It will be Kaberle and Finger who get moved next.

Just woke up and read this news. Quite the interesting start to the day. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it though. Pretty much indifferent. Not very 'game altering' trade or anything, but some big names so still gets the eyes bulging out a little.

Now to wait and see what the next big deal will be.
