As for defensive d-men with little to no offense, there's certain room for them in the top four in the NHL. They allow the offensive minded guys to roam and can cover up for them if need be.

As for Toronto's D, it's clear that Burke is still going to move a few more guys. Aulie, Schenn, Phaneuf, Beauchemin, Komisarek, Kaberle, Gunnarson, Finger, Exelby.....9 defensemen for six spots. There's probably 25 million tied up in defense alone. Yep, at least two are getting moved. Finger will be gone and you can bet that the Kaberle sweepstakes will soon start.

The trade deadline just got a whole lot more interesting this year....
You're assuming he develops into that guy though. Obviously if he turns into Robyn Regehr he's a great add-in, but that's far from guaranteed considering the guy hasn't played an NHL game.

And the Leafs are still going to be terrible this year and next because they won't have money left for offense.

Komo, Phaneuf, Giguere, and Beauchemin are over 20 mill by themselves and I wouldn't call any of those guys "elite" at this point in time.

Guys on Leafs radio were trying to compare Aulie to Tyler Myers, jeez.

Finger isn't going anywhere with that contract. I think he's at $3.5 million a year for next year and the year after and he's been a healthy scratch at times this year.

They'll waive him if they're smart.

Didn't Giguere get his NTC due to a disease his child has in the first place? Only a doctor in Anaheim knows how to heal the kid in case things go bad or something.

I really am not sure about this but I remember someone telling me something like this some time ago.

Hooray Leafs Nation.

Pretty good deal for both teams here. If the Toskala trade happens who starts in Anaheim? Toskala or Hiller?

Some sources are saying Blake and Toskala for Giggy and a 1st, but I find that hard to believe.

Hiller without question. Hiller was just extended I thought.

The guy who allows goals from center ice or the guy who just signed a 4 year deal at 4.5 per?

I have a feeling it would have to be our 1st, not Anaheim's.

I'm having a REALLY hard time believing Blake's contract is getting Toronto a 1st.

On top of that, Toronto has expenses at D while Anaheim needs D. I think a defenseman like Komi moving is more believable.

That's what I was thinking but it seems a bit much to give up one goalie and a pick (which I heard is a first but I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere yet) for a backup goalie. Is Homer making trades for Anaheim too?

Exactly. Someone else has to be included. For one, I doubt it's a first. For two, I doubt it's a forward headed to Anaheim.

Anaheim is also getting out of paying JSG over $6M next year in the deal. I would bet that's a significant consideration for them.

It only makes too much sense that Toronto has a gluttony of defensemen and Anaheim could use some defensemen.

Yeah, Giguere wanted to stay near the doctor in Anaheim which i've read alot about. I'm surprised he waived his NTC.

I know that Phaneuf has been bad, and I wanted no part of him here, but I really thought that Calgary as going to get more quality back. Don't get me wrong, the pieces they got aren't all trash but for what Phaneuf once was and represents with potential I'm surprised that at least a legit 1st liner wasn't acquired.

I guess the answer is that there just weren't any other takers and the Flames were deadset on getting rid of him

Money is the answer to all your questions.

Big contracts have become borderline untradeable the way teams have spent to the cap.

Thus "borderline."

The problem with trading big contracts is that very few teams can accommodate such a deal, so there is low bidding options and, thus, the return is lessened.

Kessel ($5.40)

Grabovski ($2.90)
Orr ($1.00)
Sjostrom ($0.75)
Rosehill ($0.51)
Kulemin (RFA)
Mitchell (RFA)

Phaneuf ($6.50)
Komisarek ($4.50)
Kaberle ($4.25)
Beauchemin ($3.80)
Finger ($3.50)
Schenn ($2.98)
Gunnarsson ($0.80)

Gigeure ($6.00)
Gustavsson (RFA)

Tucker - buyout ($1.00)
