Not difficult at all.

In fact, all you need to do is take on the expiring contracts of a few players.

The Cap sites are getting the crap pounded out of them right now. When I can actually get to the sites without hellatious lag, I will.

Doesn't mean that Calgary has the assets to beat out offers from other teams.

Even so, other teams still have more to offer to Atlanta for Kovalchuk, more so than any package Calgary can put together. If they were going to trade for Kovalchuk, wouldn't it make sense to offer Phaneuf for him?

Newsflash:

Unloading a big contract and a Salary dump

are NOT the same thing

the vancouver / sj deal you mentioned was a salary dump, how can you compare that trade with this one? it's not the same

How many teams actually are willing to trade for him as a rental player? Not many.

And you know this how? From all reports there are a handful of teams that are rumoured interested, and there are usually at least a few teams behind the scenes.

As the trade deadline approaches, more GMs will become more desperate as their teams playoff or contender fortunes start to ebb. Plus the Thrashers could go on a big slide and be out of the playoffs, meaning a more pick and propsect heavy deal....or they could go on a run and want more immediate help.

I think it is absurd to say that Kovlachuk's value is going to go down over the next month. Could it, sure. It can also go up depending on how the standings look.

However, the Flames do not seem to be a good fit for what the Thrashers are looking for. Their have a pretty weak group of F prospects, not many young Top 6 potential Fs on their roster, and they just traded their most attractive tradeable asset an hour ago.

Boston is. And they can put together a better package than Calgary.

That I know. However, outside them there really aren't any other teams that could or would take him on as a rental.

The Flames positioned themselves to be able to take him on in the offseason if not at the trade deadline. The players they took on from this deal gives the Flames the flexibility for cap room next season and Myers, Stajan and White are also attractive for teams who want to unload cap space/contracts at the end of the season.

There are always snakes in the grass for these big deals.

Did ANYONE outside the Pens board have the Penguins interested in Hossa before that deal went down? All it takes is two GMs that want Ilya, and the price starts going way up. And we know right now there are far more than 2 GMs kicking the tires.

I hope this deal blows up in Sutter's face. I want to be there when the Flames' owners kick his ass out the door.

The Pens board didn't even have us being interested in Hossa, that one came out of the blue.

If the Flames go after Ilya, it would be an awful move. They learned last year about going after big names at the deadline.

It's very easy when you're talking about Phaneuf, you make it sound like he was Gomez or Horcoff.

And they didn't free any cap space.

Original post = major fail.

Also add Stuart from 2 years ago.

They haven't learned anything.

Honestly I think the Flames are done making moves this season. I think this trade they made today instantly makes them a much better team this season. They got two top 6 forwards as well as a solid top 4 d-man. Combined with the improved play of Giordano I think that makes Phaneuf expendable. However, this does appear that Sutter is putting all his eggs into his basket for this year. He knows his job is on the line, but for this season at least, Calgary has vastly improved their playoff aspirations IMO.

This is just like the San Jose/Vancouver trade that send Ehrhoff/Lukowitch to Vancouver for prospects. This deal freed up room for San Jose to trade for Heatley.
They've freed only $725,000 for this year...Perhaps you should do some research first before you say anything!!!
