What I love is that before this trade Phaneuf is one of the most overrated players in the league and not worth his contract and White is one of the most underrated d-men in the league. Now that the former is traded to Toronto and White is traded out of Toronto all of that stuff said earlier in the year is forgotten.

In the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter. I'm sure he knows how to spell. I think people should care a little less about grammatical errors (we all make them, that's why there is proofreading) and more about what the person is saying.

Back on topic, this will be interesting to see in action. Hopefully Toronto can use Phaneuf effectively and hopefully Calgary's second line doesn't destroy us tomorrow.

Players don't just assimilate into a new system overnight usually.

Maybe I should be more worried, but I think I'll reserve my judgements for game day.

I'm pretty sure we play them only once this year. And the Oilers right after, correct?

The two biggest slumping teams back to back? Let's just hope they start turning things around AFTER we play them. I'd like the four points.

Players normally play strong the game or two after they are traded. Didn't Jokienen have two goals or something against us right when he was traded to Calagary?

Are you doing that on purpose now?

And yes, sometimes players do have outstanding games right after being traded. That's not the norm though.

Yep. I was hoping chaos would get to it first

I have no statistics to back this up, but it seems to me that players have a strong game or two. Then they take a while to get fully acquainted. But there is a good chance I am totally wrong

Calgary improved their team today 1 day before we play them

Burke is a ****ing moron, I got my skates sharpened today in anticipation of getting the call to play on the Leafs second line.
WTF are they thinking ????

Did Stajan and Hagman play together in Toronto? They might already have some chemistry built up.

That's with bonuses (For Bozak) which he won't reach this year. Next year .. not sure how it works.

That's a little more manageable.
Kaberle will likely be traded, Finger will be AHL next year, and Toronto makes a HUGE push for Kovalchuk.

Kovalchuk - ($8 for a long time)
Kessel ($5.40)
Bozak ($3.73)
Grabovski ($2.90)
Orr ($1.00)

Tucker - buyout ($1.00)
Finger ($3.50) -> to AHL

Total: $51.12 for 14 guys and 3 RFA or
(Finger to AHL) $46.87 for 13 guys and 3 RFA
maybe trade Kaberle or Beauchemin and get that number even lower.

Call up Stalberg, Hanson and Kadri and you see what happens.

1 of Kaberle or Beauchemin is moved, Kadri is up at $1.75 or something. Manageable if you move one of those 2 defensemen and get a decent youth return.

I think Phaneuf will flourish in the East and rack up some serious points. Calgary just keeps filling their team with 2nd and 3rd liners. Stajan and Hagman are nothing special (stats are a little inflated being on the leafs). Although, White is a pretty solid defensemen. The Flames are going to need to resign him. Aulie might also turn out to be a pretty solid bottom pairing defensemen (he played very well at WJC).

I don't know why everyone is laughing at the Leafs when they got the best player in this deal. This deal could be a huge win for them in the long run. They got a potential future franchise dman before he has hit his prime.

The arguement is they went from a team that couldnt score goals, to a team that REALLY can't score goals.

Yeah they were a team that couldn't score goals, weren't defending well and had some shaky goal tending. Now there is a decent chance that they become a team that defends pretty well, has a real good starting goalie, and can't score goals. They've got some young forwards though, and offensive play is more about talent than experience (at least compared to defense), so if their forwards come along nicely they could be a play off team as early as next year IMO.

Scott Burnside wrote a 1100 word article about this deal without mentioning the words 'salary cap' once. Do people still think this guy has an ounce of intelligence?

I'm prolly in the extreme minority but I think Toronto came out of this pretty well. They know the team sucks and they know they can't score so why bother trying. Get a very solid player like Phaneuf, get a real goalie, and then free up some room in the off season. While it will suck to give Boston the 1st overall, I think these moves will help them down the road alot more then holding onto the same players.

True, but they weren't going anywhere with those players. Stajan is a UFA, Hagman will be one in a year, and Mayer was on his way out. None of these guys were a part of their future, and in return they got the corner stone of their defense for the next 5 or more years. The only piece the Leafs will miss is White.

This is definitely a move for the future for the Leafs. Burke did well. He sold high on his pieces and bought low on Phaneuf. Calgary does make out okay in the short term, but the deal favors the Leafs in the long term. Which makes sense considering where both teams are today.

OK, I know he is now the Toronto Maple Leafs first line center, but seriously now. He was an undrafted college hockey player a year ago. Now after one goal and five assists in the NHL, he is scheduled to be paid more than Parise? To give you an idea of how rediculous the situation is: Just based on his AHL numbers, Bozak would be like the third line center on the Phantoms.

I went almost the whole day without hearing about these deals. Crazy doesn't begin to describe the trade with Calgary. The deal with the Ducks was incredible because I believed there was no possible way any GM would ever entertain the thought of adding Jason Blake to their roster @ $4M/season.

Boston must be licking their chops, since it appears the Leafs will be relying solely on Phil Kessel to score goals for the rest of the season up front.
