Dennis Wideman

Heres a column in the London Free Press today on Wideman:

http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/London...96760-sun.html

"Morris Dalla Costa, Free Press sports columnist
There probably isn't much that Dennis Wideman hasn't heard. The former London Knight has listened to people say he isn't big enough to play defence in professional hockey. How he isn't strong enough or mobile enough.

Such is the nature of professional sports criticism.

Focus on the negative. Those perceived short- comings are why the Buffalo Sabres never signed Wideman to a contract after making him their ninth-round pick in the 2002 NHL draft.

Never mind that his time in junior hockey was marked by extraordinary success; that he was a leader on and off the ice; that he chewed up ice time and worked his tail off whenever he got the opportunity. And then there's the proverbial cherry on top of all this: Wideman's offensive abilities.

Whats your thoughts on Wideman, will he make it to the NHL one day? I think if he continues to improve his defensive game and keeps putting up points on the board we may see him in the NHL in a few years time.

for the sabres sake.. i hope not. its annoying to hear that they are short on good defensemen and then let a scorer of this kind go. st louis can we have him back ?

At this point he looks as if he may make an impact at the NHL level, at least somewhat. Perhaps a career similar to a guy like Deron Quint? Different players sure, but maybe similar impact in the NHL.

Could be the next Rafalski or the next Slaney. Either way he gets to make a good living playing a game so BRAVO!

Umm, Worcester.

Wideman is a very good offensive defenseman. What he needs to do is bring his defensive skills up. In under half a season in the AHL he's improved in that area greatly, but he still has a way to go.

I do see him playing in the NHL someday.

Oh, and in "semi-related" news, the IceCats will be giving out a Wideman bobblehead doll April 9th. He was the winner of a vote of fans to pick the 3rd one of the season...
