Flames-Rangers Trade Confirmed (Article post #76)

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=308527

Sources tell TSN the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames are expected to announce a trade tonight that will send Calgary centre Olli Jokinen to the Rangers in exchange for Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins.

Sutter just went off the deep end.

Wow that is horrible for the Flames. I understand the need for depth, but filling out the entire roster with decent 2nd liners from Toronto and 3rd liners from the Rangers doesn't sound like a winning formula

Terrible trade for Calgary if it is true.

Dang, I don't want Prust in the Atlantic Division, unless he's with the Flyers.

Not sure what the heck is going on in Calgary though... but Jokinen/Gaborik are a scary combo.

Phaneuf and Jokinen were viewed as "cancers" in that locker room and Sutter decided he wanted to rid himself of them. I can see where he is coming from, but at least get some draft picks or something...

I don't want Gaborik having any talent around him.

Sather is like some kind of retarded genius.

He essentially traded Gomez for Higgins, McDonagh, and Gaborik (Gomez trade made Gaborik feasible), gives out another horrible contract to Kotalik, and then flips Kotalik and Higgins for Jokinen.

The Jokinen deal is a huge win for the NYR.

A) They shed Kotalik.
B) Either Jokinen meshes with Gaborik and they resign him, probably at a lower price than the 5.25 considering how bad he's been recently or they just let him walk if he sucks.

At least they still have the Redden/Drury/Rozsival contracts.

Rangers clearly win that deal, but it still doesn't really strike fear in me. Jokinen has been viewed as someone who cannot win for some time now, and as of late he has been horrible.

LOL it's true. Knowing Slats, he needed an expiring contract so he can figure out a way to overpay Kovalchuk.

This. Still though, sucks a bit for the Flyers as this does make the Rangers better (even if it is marginally) and potentially sheds salary.

Is Calgary clearing space to pave the way for Kovalchuk? I don't know what their cap situation is like.

I'm waiting for him to trade McDonagh and Anisimov for Malkin and then sign Cooke and Fedotenko each to 7 million per year deals since they're Malkin's linemates.

Perhaps.

Over at the Rangers side, they are saying if they get rid of another big contract, Kovalchuk is a Ranger. However, I don't see that happening.

They really don't have the space. I looked on Capgeek and if you assuming that Bourque gets raised to 3.5 and White gets raised to 3, that leaves them with about 9 mill and then Kotalik's 3 mill hit turns that to 6 mill.

It's very confusing. They'd have to shed Langkow and Sarich as well to have a shot and might not be able to resign Stajan.

EDIT: I also have some trouble seeing Kovalchuk wanting to move to Canadian farm country. I went to Calgary once and really liked it, but it's not exactly a huge market and those winters can be rough.

His madness sure is entertaining.

I wouldn't count him out. He always escapes jams because he can't go a summer without overpaying someone.

I hope to God that's not becoming.

I originally thought CGY was making room for Kovy by trading Phaneuf which would lead to a scary ass 1st line of Kovalchuk - Jokinen - Iginla.

I'm with the rest of you, I think the Flames are shooting themselves in the foot.

Olli's contract will expire this year, so if he doesnt work out they can always make a run for Kovy in the Offseason.

This Flyers game tomorrow just got that much more interesting. Even if you're not a Flyers fan, just the intrigue alone. Laviolette better have the boys ready to go.

Two years in a row Jokinen gets traded the day before a Flyers' game.

Yeah really, hopefully the chemistry isn't there for the Flames.
