Sources: Flames-Rangers deal in limbo

The New York Rangers and Calgary Flames were talking trade Sunday night but it wasn't clear whether their tentative deal would go through.

Two sources close to the tentative deal told ESPN.com that the Rangers were ready to ship forwards Chris Higgins and Ales Kotalik to the Flames in exchange for center Olli Jokinen and rugged winger Brandon Prust. But the deal was still not fully ironed out as of late Sunday night.

I wonder if Rangers fans are still sticking to the fire Sather path after this?

In case there was any doubt in Jokinen's rapidly declining value.

I feel like Sutter is going to wake up tomorrow with a little pile of white powder on his desk, turn on his computer, and just yell, "What the **** did I do yesterday?"

3M a year for next 3 season Kotalik (scratched for god knows how many games) and soon to be UFA can score for **** Higgins.

At least Jokinen was scoring points. Jokinen is/was a scorer. Something NYR needed to address.

Are you arguing or agreeing? Because, I think you're trying to argue, but these facts only support what I'm saying.

Higgins is useless for anything besides hard work and energy. While he was with Montreal and NY all I've heard is that he's a hard-working energy guy who misses open nets. 4th liner at best I think.

Kotalik may due well after a change of scenery. Despite his contract and general suckitude, the guy used to be really good on the PP and in the shootout so he does have some use. Jokinen could also do better with a change of scenery, but I have a hard time seeing him being anything but a secondary scorer from now on.

What did Calgary give up to get him last year anyway? I forget.

A lot . . . 2 young D men, and two picks. I believe one of them was a first rounder.

You heard wrong.

Higgins is a quality hockey player. He could do a lot better than he is doing now. I think he's a great 2nd line winger when he's playing his game. Lately he hasn't. So he's a bit of a wild card. He is hard working and can score 25 goals in a season. He is also very fast.

Ah, I haven't been paying attention to him for more then two years which is why I have that impression of him. I looked up his NHL career. Huh. Didn't realize he ever scored that many goals. Thought he was a little younger as well.

Still though, 336 career games and 165 career points. That's almost .50 PPG. Decent secondary scoring. That's being nice considering that his best years are from a few years ago.

So now if I had to describe it would be a competent bottom six guy and a second line guy on a team weak at the forward position.

Still though, he hasn't proven much in his career. He was able to pot 27 three years ago and get 52 points.. That's about his best accomplishment so far and judging by his stats that year was an outlier. I mean, just because Gomez managed PPG or Cheechoo managed 50 goals once doesn't mean that they will again. They both suck now. Higgins just seems like the same thing to me. If he put sit all together I could see him being a decent secondary scorer (in the 30 to 40 range), but that's about best-case-scenario in my opinion.

Yes we are. We've still got Wendy Redden pulling down a cool $6.5 million a year for another 4 years and Captain Intangibles pulling down $7 million for another 2.

Nah Dawg, at this rate he's probably trading them both for Kovy tomorrow.

You guys should get two GMs. one to do free agent acquisitions and just let Sather handle trades. This guy apparently knows how to bend over another GM like nobody's business, but players/agents take him to the cleaners.

the deal is limbo because Kotilik has a NMC.
Even if this trade does go through am I the only one not impressed with Jokinen being with the Rangers? Yes they will shed a contract possibly in the offseason, but are they a better hockey team? I dont know. I havent been impressed with Jokinen for awhile. if the Rangers get Kovalchuk thats another story. But right now if this deal goes though I just dont know if the Rangers are a better hockey club.

Well, imo the guy has done well against the Flyers. Overall, I'm not really impressed with Jokinen as a player, but whenever I've watched him play against us, he does well. And being that we're division rivals and could potentially be fighting for a playoff spot with the Rags right down to the wire, it kinda bothers me.

I don't think it's gonna immediately solve the problems in NY but it's a nice move to dump that contract.

Who the **** would have guessed that the only trade so far to make sense would be that Pouliot-Latendresse move?

Remember how Iginla and Jokinen were supposed to be scary? Don't **** yourselves just yet, Flyers fans. Jokinen and Gaborik will about as scary as Briere.

Really? Oh well. It'll just give the Rangers somebody else to not protect when they're dumb enough to drop the gloves.

So what's the word here? Has this gone through yet? I could care less either way. Even if Gaborik and Jokinen are incredible together, they still don't have anyone else. Kotalik wasn't really have that bad of a season, Higgins was though. Adding one player to a terrible offensive team isn't going to help. Gaborik can't really get any better than he is right now so putting Jokinen on a line with him isn't any more intimidating than Gaborik on a line with nobodies. If I'm the rangers I split the two of them up so that they have at least two lines with potential to score.

Possibility that the deal is dead.
