Sjostrom's got another year at $750,000.

Burke's definitely gambling that the players he has signed can get them to the playoffs.

he still has a lot of hefty contracts that are locked in.

Sutter is going to take a beating on this deal, and I can see why, but he honestly helps setup Calgary to at least make some type of move now or in the offseason. That flexibility is pretty important for a roster that has locked in a lot of players to high priced deals.

I'm not sure that these moves are for this years playoffs. Their offense just took a bug hit and they now have 0 centers. Both Giggy and Dion are signed for next season.

I still think that the leafs will be sellers and Burke is making those moves with others in mind.

However the 2010-11 team is still going to be overloaded on D and short on offense.

I'd be really surprised (unless Burke surprises me with other moves) if the Leafs are a playoff team next season either. Yeah, they're heavy on defense, but it's full of overrated and overpaid players. The one guy that was actually underrated, and playing above his salary is now in Calgary. Even if they did manage to move Blake out, they've still got very little room to add any significant UFAs.

Jose Theodore will be backed up this afternoon by Braden Holtby, not Michal Neuvirth.

Neuvirth, I'm told, has been sent to Hershey so that he can qualify to play for the Bears for during the Olympic break. If you recall, it's the same thing that happened to Karl Alzner earlier this month.

I don't think they're a playoff team next season either. But I also expect more moves. They can't go into next season with $25m invested in 6 D. I know Kaberle has stated his desire to stay, but it just makes sense to trade him, especially with a new PP-specialist coming on board. Kaberle is a solid contract that can get Burke the 1st round pick he needs. Won't be a top 5 pick, but #20 is better than nothing.

As of now, the Leafs would have $43.5m invested in a roster that has only 4 NHL forwards, one of whom is Colton Orr. They need a ton of players, and Kessel is their only top 6 forward.

I'll be at the game in Boston tomorrow. With Green still suspended, which defenseman do you think I'll see? Alzner? Carlson, TFS?

Also, any chance the Caps try out Holtby in net?

All Tyler, all the time.

Holtby's best chance is one of the back-to-backs later this week.

Twitter: TarikElBashir - Although Mike Green must sit out the next two games because of the suspension, he looks ready to play. He's skating hard with the scratches.

From Japers':

Quote:
Per Aftonbladet, the Caps may be close to signing Nicklas Backstrom to a long-term deal that could be announced following the Olympic break.

According to the article, the team is seeking a deal that would keep Nick in D.C. through 2020-2021, but Backstrom's agent is looking for a five-year deal (which certainly would seem like a sizable gap for something that's allegedly imminent).

A Caps official said the team has no comment on the report.
Get it done GMGM.

It makes sense that those are the terms each side is working towards. Weren't both the Kane and Toews deals for 5 years?

I'm still waiting for a player to take a discount for GMGM. Come on Backstrom. Look at Duncan Keith, not Patrick Kane.

At the Academy (Plebe Year) when you had to do something as an individual but everyone had to do it (ie making your bed in x minutes) we always had to go into the hallway and go to the push-up position and wait for the rest of your classmates to finish. Every so often they'd make you do one and hold.

We'd have to yell "we're waiting on our classmates sir"... "waiting on our classmates..." Sometimes we'd be out there for about 5-10min doing pushups and holding... yelling.

That painful and totally out of your control feeling of waiting... waiting...

That's what GMGM's signings remind me of.

An interesting change is taking place among the national hockey media on their view of the Capitals. This weekend Mike Milbury said the Caps were starting to play some defense and he was impressed.

Today on NHL Live responding to a question about the Capitals need for a defenseman, EJ Hradek asked "Why? They are loaded." Then something to the effect of "their defense fits their style and their forwards. The only thing they might need....is a veteran that has won it before. A role player."

Essentially he is saying that the Caps are perfecting their game and the defensemen they have fit what they do as well or better than what they might be able to acquire.

I wonder if we see more of this over the coming weeks.

Never had a problem with Hradek, but Milbury's a complete buffoon. I agree with the **** the media sentiment.

We all pretty much know the situation with the defense. It's not nearly as bad as it's been made out to be, but without a quality addition, it will likely have it's weaknesses exposed in a 7-game series.

Maybe the media has been reading our posts making fun of them for saying we need to upgrade the defense or goalie in the middle of this streak. Now lets go hash out what defensemen we need in the other thread. And Goalie.
