I do have to say that I too have come around to the idea that the Caps need not an old school, pre-lockout shutdown defenseman type, but a big-minute mobile player, a post-lockout defenseman, who can play on Boudreau's team.

Someone like a Zbynek Michalek (not that he's available, but if we're daydreaming about "Coteys," that's my guy.)

The Caps need a vet guy that has done it all before. More for the locker room and the plane and the bench than for on the ice. Is that not a crazy concept to anyone else?

I'm not worried about the guys when they are gung ho, I'm just worred about the guy that's done it all and seen it all to help them react.

That sort of takes us back to Minnesota and Zidlicky or Johnsson.

Yes to Zidlicky, perhaps, but not Johnsson. I'm not a huge fan of where his game has gone.

Would be nice to see a little loyalty. Green and Backstrom on short deals and Semin on the cusp of walking....

I rag on him a lot, but I don't know that Semin wants to leave. He just wants to get paid.

Well they all saw firsthand what happens when you want to get paid and the risks that run if you fall short of your value. Doesn't matter if you're the Captain or the worlds greatest swedish meatball cook.

I don't consider a 4 year deal that short, especially considering he'll be an RFA at the end of the contract. I'd rather a 4 year deal with us retaining green's rights than a 6 year deal he walks at the end of.

With the passage of time, Green's contract is very team friendly, in my opinion.

For me, the requirement is even less -- anybody who can play #4 minutes and is fairly capable of dealing with cycling teams decently -- be it by using speed, or physicality, or great reach. Everything else is a bonus..

Be that as it may, I don't anticipate mr tribal tattoo and Italian sports cars signing for less than market (which should be pretty close to a max contract) in 2 years.

I am fine with letting things play out. It appears that McPhee wants to keep his team together. Seems he is managing his budget to allow enough money to pay all his players. I think his players all know that.

When it comes time to squeeze to try and fit everyone it will be interesting to see which if any of these players are going to take the step of saying I would rather make what I want rather than stay and play with this team.

I wonder who wants to be the first? I wonder which of them wants to be Ryan Malone.

Someone is going to think the grass is greener elsewhere and GMGM will send them packing. Thing is, the 'Hershey Nucleus" seems to be pretty tight, so I would like to think they can keep this together for a few years, replacing the likes of Noobs and BMo as they move on.

Greenie really needs to have a strong showing in playoffs -- otherwise the Caps should think twice about paying him his market worth.

Only a matter of time before someone will want to follow in Witt's footsteps and go to a contender...

?

He has 2 more years on his contract. The earliest a new contract can be entered into is July 1, 2011 for 2012-12 season forward.

Thats a two edge sword. Big playoffs = big contract.

Yep... looking ahead

@txpd -- I'm not sure the playoffs influence a star player's market-value nearly as much as fat regular season contribution. Which makes sense, seeing how the majority of NHL's teams is much more occupied with actually making the playoffs, drawing fans, etc.

File Under "Poor Defense, Poor Goaltending"

Yep.

http://network.nationalpost.com/np/b...y-defence.aspx

And besides, those Canadians cannot even spell defense correctly.

Kidding, O Canada. We remember the Queen's English fondly and misplace our quotation marks because we know no better.

Yeah my concern is not so much with this deal but the next one. You can bank on his agent starting with 7 million on the LOW end.

He's going to want somewhere in the range of 7-8.5 million given his production and if he snags a Norris? Forget it.... His contract will be off the charts.

The Jokinen and Prust for kotalik and higgins deal is done. Any chance Kovalchuk is going to Calgary now?
