January 13th

historical note...January 13th was the date back in 1994 when it was announced that a new labor had been reached and the strike would end....games were to be started the 20th of January and a 48 game season would be played..

this is why we've been hearing so many rumors in the last few days about movement in players and owners positions i believe....wishful,wistful thinking i'm afraid

I just heard a lengthy interview with Bettman on Mike Francessa's show up here in NYC. Basically, he reiterated his stance that the owners are willing to hold out as long as possible until the NHLPA is ready to negotiate in good faith...something they've yet to do. He acknowledged that a 24 percent roll back seemed like an attractive offer, but pointed out that it would be a short span of time before everyting was the same if not worse than before. Anything that's not a form of cost-certainty will continually be rejected, but he pointed out that the puck is "in the players end" as far as the next owner. He said that he misses hockey as much as the most die hard of fans, but he feels that the majority of fans want to see the game preserved long term, and view this as a necessary evil.

I have never wanted to be wrong more in my life. It's always possible that something would happen but, I just don't see an end in sight to salvage this season. All these people on the "Business" board seem to be getting their hopes up with some "rumblings/rumors/interviews" that something could happen today or the next few days, but I don't see it.
