I can think of at least two. John LeClair and Ron Hextall. Anyone have another name that they think should be hanging from the rafters?

Nope. Not even Hextall and LeClair, two of my favorite players. If someone great had a number already, it's an honor for future players to wear. If someone truly unbelievable had it already, it should not be worn. Hex and John aren't in that second category.

To this day it's still odd for me to see anyone with number 2 (Howe). Hatcher, ok maybe. Dimitri Yushkevich, no way.

Mark Howe. He had the misfortune of playing during the heyday of Coffey, Bourque, and Langway, but a guy who was a top 5-10 d-man in the league for a decade with the Flyers.

He's always been brutally underrated, even by the Philly fanbase.

There is something very specific which all four players whose numbers hang above the Wach ice achieved as a Flyer, that noone mentioned in thread has yet achieved.

I was just going to say Howe. He should be in the Hall of Fame.

Eh, I don't think there's any harm recognizing some of the feats of those 80s teams.

I mean, those guys lost twice in the SCF to arguably the best team of the last 30 years led by the greatest player ever and in one of those, took them to 7 games even with a bunch of key players injured.

No harm in really recognizing some of the greats who played during that time, I think Howe really deserves it, he's criminally underrated.

I believe he and Coffey both had their finest seasons in 85-86. Howe was like +90 with 80 points and a bunch of shorthanded goals, but that was the year Coffey had 140 points or w/e, so Howe didn't get the Norris.

If he wins that Norris, he's in the Hall no question IMO, had one of the best, most consistent decades ever for an NHL d-man.

I don't necessarily disagree, but it's abundantly clear where the organizations priorities lie, and I would be shocked to see a player who doesn't win the cup as a Flyer get his number retired by this team.

Which is dumb IMO, he's unquestionably the greatest d-man in franchise history and you could make an argument that he's their 3rd or 4th greatest player (depending on how much you like Barber).

The franchise is over 40 years old, I'm not in favor of retiring numbers willy nilly, but he's one of the top-5 guys to ever wear the O and B.

That's why they get into the Flyers Hall of Fame. I'd rather not make retiring numbers into the gong show that other teams do. If they do it for Hextall, they should do it for Howe. If they do it for Howe, they should do it for Desjardins and so on. Where does it end? The Flyers' specifications for having a number retired is perfect IMO. And it adds to the history and prestige of that honor since those guys were able to do what the ultimate goal of the game is.

While I don't think it should be retired by ANY means, it would be ****ing weird to see someone wear 88 here in the future.

I agree with Mark Howe and his #2. I MIGHT say LeClair and his #10, but whatever. I dont want to end up like the Canadiens in 50 years who have almost every number between 1 and 30 retired.

I'm ok with keeping our retired #'s reserved for very few players.

Well I mean, let's break it down.

Hexy - Had some good years with us and one fantastic one, but was never consistently in the upper echelon of NHL netminders for a prolonged period.

Rico - Great player, but never a Norris finalist and I don't think he ever quite cracked that upper tier of NHL d-men.

The Flyers don't have a whole lot of truly great players, only 3 HOFers, all of whom got their numbers retired.

By any objective measure, Howe is a Hockey HOFer, Flyers should give him some of the recognition he deserves.

Lindbergh's is informally retired which is the way it should be IMO.

Nobody from my lifetime. Howe I could understand - though I'm too young to really argue either way - but I'm fine with the organization's lofty standards thus far.

But he didn't win a cup. This is the ultimate goal of hockey and that's why it's one of the specifications set by the team. He has gotten the recognition by being inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame.

I know people may hate me for this, but what did Ashbee deserve to get his # retired? I never understood it, might as well ask someone more knowledgeable then me.

cancer. But first he won two cups, and a Conn Smythe and is considered one of the most important players in developing the image, style and soul of those early 70s teams.

EDIT: One cup, and no conn smythe. I had combined him and McLeish into one uber-Bullie. Hopefully this edit comes in time to keep MSE from taking me to school.
