Mike Rathje

I know this has probably been answered a bunch of times and doesn't deserve its own thread, but I can't find the answer. What is his cap hit and why? Capgeek has him listed at $3.5 but I know that isn't right. Thanks.

His cap hit is 3.5 but when someone is on LTIR you are allowed to exceed the cap by that amount.

So essentially, it's a wash...no sense in counting his 3.5.

It feels like we've had this guy for ten years. Wasn't it only a five year deal? How much longer? Every fall I cringe thinking that he might try and make a comeback.

This is the last year of his deal. His lasts 1 year longer than Hatcher's did.

well, depends how back his back pain is

if he can't even play hockey, he's probably in a lot of pain and can't even jerk off

Anyone remember the Flyers promo video when we brought him, Hatcher, and Forsberg in? You would have thought it was Howe, Coffey, and Lindros.

Eh, wouldn't be shocked if he'd give a significant amount of it back to have been playing these years.

He is a nice guy but a cheap SOB. He stopped in my local hangout when he first got into town. He was by himself so I shot him over a beer. He came over and chatted with me and my buddy for two or three hours. We brought every round!! He did not even offer to buy one drink. LOL He came in once after that and did buy us a beer. I haven't seen him since.

Meh when healthy he was a decent defensive defender.

Really? If he'd stayed healthy we probably would have had a quality 3.5M defensive D. I thought he was great the first half of that season with Pitkanen...then the wheels came off in a big way.

How is this great news?

It is a wash, the team is already against the cap and not having to pay him his money in no way positive or negative does this change that.

Not having people on the LTIR allows you to save up the cap space you dont use, which comes in handy for deadline acquisitions

If they are allowed to exceed the cap by his salary, wouldn't that space be there either way?

nope. if we are "under" the cap with his salary, his cap hit forces us up and over the cap. its very confusing, but we dont get day to day savings. If we had more than 3.5 cap space we wpuld have some savings

Hatcher with knees and Rathje with a back would have solved a lot of our defensive woes over the last few seasons. It sucks for Rathje because he wasn't a *****. Back pain is no ****ing joke. I think most of us would rather have knee pain any day of the week. Except for Opus who... err... has it every day of the week.

I am confused. So if his caphit is 3.5, and it doesn't count cuz he's on LTIR, and we have about 2.6 capspace left... We can still sign someone this season for upto 2.6 mill right?
