I might take him on re-entry waivers or something, but even then I rather give more minutes to young guys.

he might be nice to have if something happens to foote, since they are kinda the same player, re-entry would be preferred

A lot of teams would take Witt on re-entry waivers. He'd be a great bottom pairing guy for the Flyers.

If Witt didn't have another year left, he'd for sure be had in a trade, but no one wants to be on the hook for next season for that much

He has been noticeably slower for the past year or so. In the Isles uptempo system, that's a big problem. That lost step also somewhat hurts his ability to be a shutdown guy. He may still have value to a team with a tighter checking system (Devils?) that needs a veteran hitter. He's one of the toughest guys you'll ever see. It is true--he was hit by an SUV outside Starbucks. He got up, waved off the ambulance, told everyone "it's ok I'm a hockey player", went in and got his latte, and played that night.

bottom pair dman on a contender, hed be fine. he still gives up his body to block a ton of shots and is tough as nails...just too slow for gordons uptempo system. he didnt like it last yr and im sure hes still not fond of it. hes def a great leader and teammate.

That is awesome. Two Chuck Norris points to Witt.
Alas I think Witt is Sean Hill of two seasons ago. If he wants to play i the NHL again I think he is going to either waive the balance of his contract(or get bought out) and sign with a team for league minimum.

PS- Read the TSN.ca news archive on the story. Guess I should change that to Clint Eastwood points.

New York Islanders defenceman Brendan Witt was hit by a car in Philadelphia on Tuesday, according to Newsday. But Witt reportedly picked himself up off the road and, after a few profanities, assured everyone he was all right before continuing on his way, prompting one witness to say, "it was like seeing Clint Eastwood, but in hockey."

Yeah, that's an issue. A shutdown guy with no speed is pre-lockout effective. Still could see the Pens, Devils, teams like that giving him a look.

Witt sucks. The Devils have no use for him - especially with White, Salvador and Fraser on the roster. All of whom are better.

same time next year he would be traded or picked up by now. but with the year left and the 3 million dollars i doubt he gets picked up.

Barring a stunning physical recovery, I agree. He was 2-3 steps behind the play consistently.

Burke might as well claim Perrault, no harm in taking a flyer on the guy.

What are the buyout rules regarding contracts? I'm not definite, but isn't it you have to pay 80% of the remaining contract and spread the cap hit out over twice the # of years remaining?

If this is right, maybe the Isles realize that they will probably have to buy Witt out at the end of the season and will be on the hook for 80% of the contract. Assuming no one will trade for him with that contract, why not waive him and see if he get's picked up? If he doesn't get picked up, reclaim him through waivers and see if he get's picked up at half price.

If you already resigned yourself to paying 80% through a buyout or even 100% with him in the AHL, if he get's picked up on re-entry waivers, you would only be on the hook for 50% of the remaining contract.

Thoughts?

I'd be willing if he dropped to San Jose ... We need a 5th D-man and he only has 2.5 mil left for next season. Just make sure you get rid Kent Huskins, Doug Wilson!!!

Sure, take him at half the cost and save Phoenix a bit of money since he's being paid on a one way to play in San Antonio.

Then Poni to the Yotes for a 2nd as was apparently talked about on NHL Powerplay.

Makes sense to me.

not for 1.5 or so. Teams need big Dmen, Rangers would take a shot at half

This guy is the worst defenseman on a last-place team. You really think other teams are going to line up to claim him? His career is kafut. He'll be bought out in the off-season and it's over.
