"Ultimately, we offered Kovy more than $101 million over 12 years, which would have been the highest contract signed by an impending unrestricted free agent in the history of the league. If accepted, this contract would have been the second highest offer ever to any NHL player. We also met his desire to be the highest paid player based on average annual salary with a separate offer of 7 years at $10M per year ($70M). This offer is $0.5M higher per year than any other player.
If we went beyond these offers, we would not be able to retain the young players on our roster when it came time to sign them, or invest in other top tier players needed to assemble a truly competitive team. Therefore, we are aggressively exploring all of our options as we move forward."
According to USA Today's Kevin Allen, Atlanta forward Ilya Kovalchuk and defenseman Anssi Salmela have been traded to the Devils in exchange for defenseman Johnny Oduya, right wing Niclas Bergfors, prospect Patrice Cormier and a first-round draft pick. Teams swap 2nd rounders in 10 draft.
Apparently in the mix are the Blackhawks, Bruins , Flyers, Flames , Devils, Kings and Rangers
We should be in that as long as our first this year isn't part of the package. I would give up gags and vishnovsky/souray and osully and our 1st in 2011.
kovy is top 3 goal scorer in the league behind only heatley and ovechkin.
That is an instant rebuild player.
Next year when healthy.
Kovy horc hemsky

Potulny cogs Eberle

They unloaded Jokinen and Celine (two proven playoff disappearing acts) to free up some salary, and they will make a hard pitch for Kovy (if they don't already have a handshake deal in place). There's no way an NHL GM not named Kevin Lowe would have given up that much for so little in return...especially knowing that almost all of those players could very well be rentals. Sutter's not a savior but he does built pretty decent "win now" teams.
Then really all they need is a center...Doug Weight is a UFA at the end of this year, so he'll be a very solid rental player, as he's proven and could very easily slot in with Iggy and Kovalchuk.
