Kovalchuk & Anssi Salmela traded to Devils for Oduya, Bergfors, Cormier and a 1st

I figure something will pop up here sooner rather than later, so let's get this started.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=308800
http://tsn.ca/columnists/bob_mckenzie/?id=308816

Quote:
Thrashers general manager Don Waddell met with the star forward on Wednesday and told him to expect a trade to another NHL team over the next few hours or days.

...

Teams have been told Waddell wants one top six forward, one top four defenceman and a prospect or high end draft pick.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=308935
Quote:
"Ultimately, we offered Kovy more than $101 million over 12 years, which would have been the highest contract signed by an impending unrestricted free agent in the history of the league. If accepted, this contract would have been the second highest offer ever to any NHL player. We also met his desire to be the highest paid player based on average annual salary with a separate offer of 7 years at $10M per year ($70M). This offer is $0.5M higher per year than any other player.

If we went beyond these offers, we would not be able to retain the young players on our roster when it came time to sign them, or invest in other top tier players needed to assemble a truly competitive team. Therefore, we are aggressively exploring all of our options as we move forward."

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=515802
Quote:
According to USA Today's Kevin Allen, Atlanta forward Ilya Kovalchuk and defenseman Anssi Salmela have been traded to the Devils in exchange for defenseman Johnny Oduya, right wing Niclas Bergfors, prospect Patrice Cormier and a first-round draft pick. Teams swap 2nd rounders in 10 draft.

Updates
--------------------------------------

Apparently in the mix are the Blackhawks, Bruins , Flyers, Flames , Devils, Kings and Rangers

edit #1: Flames out per Bob Mackenzie's twitter

edit #2: USA Today writer Kevin Allen reports on his twitter that Kovalchuk will be traded to an Eastern Conference team tonight.

edit #3: Bob Mackenzie confirming trade tonight rumors. Boston and the Rangers out

edit #4: Kevin Allen's twitter: "I will be able to confirm the team at 7:30. Stay tuned". Philly out

edit #5: TSN, Dredger all reporting Devils will be acquiring Kovalchuk

edit #6: Dan Rosen of NHL.com confirms Kovalchuk to Devils. Details pending

edit #7: From Elliot Freidman's twitter: "Believe the deal is Oduya, Bergfors, Nick Palmieri and a first rounder"

Edit #8: Confirmed from all twitter feeds.
It's Oduya, Bergfors, Cormier and 2010 1st.

Edit #9: Done deal.

too bad for Atlanta. it's now D-Day for the franchise, either they turn the corner and start to build a legit contender, depending on who they get in return, or they go down the toilet!

I doubt you'll have to worry about that. It's probably going to turn into a bidding war between teams, and there are some teams in the mix that can put a hefty package together.

from Bob Mackenzie's twitter

Quote:
Teams in mix for Kovalchuk include: Boston, New Jersey, Rangers, Philadelphia, Calgary, Chicago and L.A. Some more. Some less. Auction time.

I don't think any of those teams would offer anything mind blowing.

Chicago would probably do Barker + Versteeg + Byfuglin? I don't understand Chicago they have a Stanley cup calibre team why mess with it.

Kings

Brown + Simmonds + JJ but that would cripple their depth.

I don't see how any team can make a trade that doesn't hurt their depth.

I never thought they would part with Kovy. That's really too bad for the city.

At this point, Thrashers will not let any team talk to Kovalchuk about an extension. To do so would put power in hands of player/agent.
Off topic, but also from Bob Mackenzie's twitter

We should be in that as long as our first this year isn't part of the package. I would give up gags and vishnovsky/souray and osully and our 1st in 2011.
kovy is top 3 goal scorer in the league behind only heatley and ovechkin.

That is an instant rebuild player.
Next year when healthy.
Kovy horc hemsky
penner brule nilsson
Potulny cogs Eberle
Jaques stone storts

souray gilbert
smid grebs
gilbert struds
plante/chorney

If Sutter manages to get him and send Langkow back the other direction in the deal, I think I might have to become a flames fan.

If Atlanta accepts anything from Calgary than Waddel should be fired. There is nothing there that Calgary is willing to give up that can help Atlanta.

Thats why I said "Willing to give up" so that doesn't include Kipper, Iginla and Jbo.

I think Atlanta wants nhl players on value contracts. Nobody can match Calgary in that area.

My guess is Calgary.

They unloaded Jokinen and Celine (two proven playoff disappearing acts) to free up some salary, and they will make a hard pitch for Kovy (if they don't already have a handshake deal in place). There's no way an NHL GM not named Kevin Lowe would have given up that much for so little in return...especially knowing that almost all of those players could very well be rentals. Sutter's not a savior but he does built pretty decent "win now" teams.

Then really all they need is a center...Doug Weight is a UFA at the end of this year, so he'll be a very solid rental player, as he's proven and could very easily slot in with Iggy and Kovalchuk.

I think if the Kings get him he could very well push them deep into the playoffs this year if not all the way.

If Chicago somehow manages to land him without moving many pieces they'd have to be Cup favorites if they aren't already.
