Does it kill anyone else that Boston is in on this, and yet we are not?

If Kovalchuk doesn't land in Montreal then let's hope he moves West!

Not where Boston is in the standings, no. They're going in the same way Montreal would, as an ill-advised desperation move. They should keep their futures.

I'd put my money on Calgary or Anaheim.

Keep telling yourself that. Maybe somehow it will come true!

If the do that, they cripple their blueline. Kaberle is the only puck mover they have left. Their unit was already unbalanced before they traded a passer for a bruiser. And I think Burke might just be bruiser-obsessed enough to do it.
Cripple their blue line is a big word. I think they're better with Kaberle there for sure but if they get a good forward in return, there's no way to find what would happen.

Hey, I refrained from writing my opinion that Ian White was the best player in the deal, but I feel justified now that Bob McKenzie has put it in his blog...

I think you're buying a liiiiiiiiiiitle bit too much in the Phaneuf hype. Fantastic vision? Really?

Maybe Phaneuf's ability will live up to his hype someday, but for now he's a human highlight reel who is defensively erratic and not a 6.5 million D-man.

With no puck movers, I don't think it's a stretch to say they're going to suffer. Someone has to transition that puck, and given the Habs' inability or unwillingness to do so we're all well aware of the consequences not to.

Word is that Calgary (via McKenzie) and Chicago (via Friedman) are not in the race for Kovy.

I'd LOVE to have Kovalchuk... LOVE

I'd go out and buy his jersey the next day. Problem is, if he's only going to be a rental he is of no use to us. No need to throw away the farm for player that will be here 2 months.

If we could lock him up to a respectable deal worth 7.5-8M cap hit, it wouldn't be too bad... But to give him the apparant 10M a year he wants, just simply will not happen...

All indications seems to indicate he will bolt to Russia's KHL and instantly become the KHL's version of Ovechkin (super-uber mega-ultra Star).

he wants to come to hockey crazt market , where he is a hockey star.

I remember him saying recently (allstar game) Montreal was a fav of his

If we dont get him now , maybe offseason as UFA

If you think Bob Gainey sucks, just watch what Don Waddell is about to do.

That's interesting, then I'd say Anaheim or San Jose. Nobody mentioned San Jose for some reason, but Kovy as a rental would promote them from a serious contender to a fearsome contender.

People should realize Montreal has close to 0 cap space. Sure we could find a way to juggle and to make some salaries gymnastic, but you know just too damn well this isn't Gainey's style.

I'm not expecting much this year at the deadline, I've been just too disappointed 2 years ago when we lost on Hossa.

Gainey isn't willing to take risks.

2nd. Wadell isn't interested in picks and prospects. He wants a hockey deal. Getting Kovalchuk would mean giving up both Kostitsyns and possibly Gorges as a package, with possibly one or two other assets.

I, for one, think Wadell could ask for Plekanec + both Kostitsyns.

If you can sign Kovalchuk to an extension and move Pouliot to C, I'd be opened to doing that. But I doubt Gainey would.

Unless Calgary is trading Iggy, which they won't...they don't have what Waddell wants.

Anaheim, Bobby Ryan would have to go the other way. But, why trade Ryan who is a good young player and will cost half the price?

I don't see those teams involved.

Salary Cap could fit Kovalchuk if you were to give up the two K brothers and Spacek for this year... and not resign Mara for next year...

I'm sure if you get him here and there is a good chemistry with him and Pleky they would both take a one mil cut to play here... given Markov will be here for years to come too....

In two years the raise in Markov's paycheck will come from whatever Hamerlik's pay cut will be ....

Pouliot and one of our goalies will get a pay raise...

MAB very little...

I'm talking about Kovy as a rental. Why would Wadell want Pleks who is going to be UFA? There's a limit to what Wadell can get for a rental. If it's a sign and trade, it's a completely different story, but that's never going to happen. I would not trade any core players for Kovy, but I would go with heavy prospects and drafts pics.

Gainey made a mistake when he didn't go after Gaborik. I had this gut feeling he was going to have an injury free year. He had the problem corrected in the offseason. You want someone that can score/points close to Ovy numbers its Gaborik and he come cheaper.
