Bergfors, Oduya, Tedenby, and a 1st... That's a steep payment for a rental.

They weren't. This team is not a contender.

Chasing another Thrasher, Hossa, in 07 though was a different story. Could have made a real difference.

Besides, imagine a scoring star like Kovalchuk in Martin's system. Spend 20 minutes a game twiddling his thumbs in the defensive zone? Whee.

At least it looks like Atlanta is out of the playoff picture now.

*************

I can now confirm Bergfors, Oduya, a 1st round pick, and Mattias Tedenby are headed to the Thrashers for Kovalchuk.

--------------------------------------------------------

Tedenby is going to be a damn good player.

I'm kind of relieved that this was the result (although him going to LA next year would be nicer). We're not chasing NJ and hopefully this weakens the thrashers enough to drop them out of the race.

At least no Boston, Philly, Tor (not that those were viable as time passed, but you never know).

I don't know much about these New Jersey players so is this a good return for Kovy?

This is not a good thing. Montreal is also out of the picture, and that's more competition for that 13-spot.

are you kidding me? You think even a rental like kovalchuk could make this team a contender this year in the playoffs? We're a ways off, my friend, best change that username with logic like yours.

i guess the only thing is?

even with these players were a sub team at best

so why not go after a stud, and build around him,

can't win with what we have now

Not a bad deal for Atlanta considering the circumstances. I'm a fan of Tedenby's as well, he's going to be a good one.

could we still have matched the reported deal of Oduya, Bergfors, Tedenby + 1st?

With the names mentioned, anything less would be surprising.

That's similar to Pacioretty, O'Byrne, 1st and Leblanc.

so you don`t know we did or didn`t... but you choose to think we didn`t?

good logic.

why not give the sky for kovy vs vinny? Cuz vinny will be here for many years, and Kovy probably won`t give then fact he rejected a 10mil per year contract. Even if he was willing to take 9 to 10 mil, how the heck do we fit him into our salary structure? Trade Gomez? Who plays 2nd line? Maxim Lapierre?

This early deal does have interesting Habs implications, however. Should the Habs choose to put Plekanec on the market, he's suddenly the best available scorer out there -- and while he's not the equal of Kovalchuk he's also not as one-dimensional.

But then again the Habs probably want to keep him.

Food for thought for the Habs' GM.

We have a REAL superstar anyways. Gomez makes 7.4M annually, and Kovalchuk only makes like 6.3M..

So obviously, Gomez is way better.

and you think we are a contender with the team we have now???

how could we be worse , with kovo

and i only say this, IF WE SIGNED HIM

as a rental, yes i agree , don't trade for him

so if you think this team is great, wow
