Flyers to talk extension with Emery soon; not interested in Turco

Quote:
EDMONTON, Alberta — The Flyers are planning to talk to Ray Emery’s agent in March about a contract extension.

General manager Paul Holmgren told CSNPhilly.com that he would be amendable to discussing a contract extension in-season, rather than wait till the off-season.

As far as the Flyers are concerned, they’ve seen enough of Emery to make their goalie for the foreseeable future beyond this season.

I wouldn't sign him to anything just yet. I want to see him in the playoffs before I give him any real money or years.

If I remember correctly Holmgren also mentioned that he would not lock Emery up until the offseason. These are just prelim talks.

As for the Marty Turco internet reports, Holmgren said he had been contacted by Dallas GM Joe Nieuwendyk several times but told him the Flyers were happy with Ray Emery.

As CSNPhilly.com reported on Wednesday, the Flyers want to open talks on re-signing Emery in March after the NHL trade deadline.

“That [Turco deal] is not happening,” Holmgren said. “There is no chance of that happening. If we had interest in Marty Turco, we’d certainly look at him over the summer. We can’t take that cap hit [at that spot].”

Turco earns $5.7 million.

Even if he isn't a starter next year he's more then capable of being a backup so I'm fine with getting an extension for him as long as the cap hit isn't too big.

I think this is the smartest move. The true test of a goalie will come down the stretch and of course in the playoffs.

I'm all for this... Turco is not an improvement from Emery IMO especially because we can probably lock up Razor for half of what Turco wants.

It's a gamble, if he plays well he costs more to re-sign. If you re-sign him and he folds your stuck with him.

Agreed. Wouldn't even want him as a backup goalie.

We need a real goalie if we want to compete against the Penguins and Devils.

In the division with Brodeur, Lundqvist, MAF, as well as older but still good Rolston and who knows about DP situation.

Flyers may have Emery. How ironic.

I'm guessing you mean Roloson.

A goalie's success is largely determined by how the team in front of him plays. Lundqvist is arguably a better goalie than MAF. Yet MAF has more success.

What does it have to do with the Flyers?

Hope for another playoff collapse. He's going to be 34, and they have a few good goaltending prospects, as well as a few other players to re-sign.

The pieces could fall together

And yet, this is still all wishful thinking.

They've got a few good goalie prospects who probably won't even be ready until at least the end of next year. Nabokov's going to get a deal that's too long, a prospect will wait, and he'll eventually probably just retire a Shark.

Who are their other goalie prospects? I only know about Stalock. Oh. And Sateri too, I guess.

Turco was pretty good like 8 years ago.

With all the fleecing going on any chance get the Panthers to give us Vokoun for nada or get this year's worst sophmore slump, Steve Mason, from Columbus for a Coburn like return. Heck its worth a shot
