Why would teams give up a ransom for kovalchuk when he has said that if he doesn't sign in atlanta, he's going to play in the KHL?

Next season:

Kane-Antropov-Little
Free Agent-Peverley-Bergfors
White-Reasoner-Machalek
Boulton-Slater Thornburn

Bogosian-Enstrom
Oduya-Hainsey
Schubert/Popovic-Valabik

Free Agent-Pavelec

The GM (Hopefuly not DW) needs a big offseason. White doesn't fit anymore and I doubt the remaining UFA will re-sign except for maybe Slater and Schubert.

The team needs 2 top 6 forwards and possibly 1 or 2 third liners (depending if Machalek makes the team)

And finally the teams new no 1 priority - a legit starting goaltender (with no prior year injury concerns!)

I think getting a new goalie coach will go a long way towards helping that become a reality.

Sign Hedberg as a goalie coach. Go after a free agent goalie for certain.

Svatos, Frolov, Plekanec, Ponikorovski, do you offer Kovy a deal again?

Does Patrick Marleau become a big target for the Trash this summer? We will have $$$

The FA keeper front could be interesting. The following goalies are UFA at the end of the season

Chris Mason-Stl
Dan Ellis-Nas
Pekka Rinne-Nas
Marty Turco-Dal
Evgeni Nabokov-San

are you guys assuming that you'll trade all your UFAs at the deadline, or that none of your UFAs are going to re-sign?
Why doesn't a single 2010-11 lineup include any one of Kozlov, Afinogenov, Armstrong or Kubina?

Kozlov is already 37
Rumor is Afinogenov said if Kovy left, he would too.
Army only signed a one-year del last summer and probably wants to move on
Kubina likely moves on as well.

How do we continue a sustained playoff push?

Well here is my take:

First off I have no idea what to do with Max. After taking his most recent comments into consideration and his general inconsistent play and overall fragile psyche, I could see his play continue to drop off. We need to address this issue before the olympic break. We either offer Max have to ask Max what his true intentions are. If he mopes and acts like an insolent stereotypical Russian, then we package his ass. If he thinks he can help lead this team to a playoff spot, then we should offer him a contract for between 2-3 years about 3.5-4.5 a year.

We do the same thing with Colby. Give him a decent raise and try to convince him to sign by the Olympics or package him too.

We then somehow try to trade Lehtonen or Pavalec maybe in conjunction with todd white and/or NJ 1st for some immediate help for our playoff push. Maybe try to reacquire Tkachuk if the blues are out of it by early March.

We then send a 2nd and maybe a prospect for Ponikarovsky.

If we make at least a couple of these moves I am confident we will become a better team than what we had under the Kovalchuk administration.

Could we package Max and Colby to Boston for Colborne?

What about Max to LA for Frolov?

Anyways I think this could be a realistic and very viable playoff team if we make it to the big dance.

Poni-Antropov-Max
Kane-Peverley-Bergfors
Kozlov-Slater-Little
Boults-Reasoner- Armstrong
Thorburn

Kubina-Hainsey
Enstrom-Bogo
Schubert-Oduya
Valabik

Lehtonen
Pavalec

It is a very popular rumor that Max will not re-sign if Ilya is gone.

With the year Army has had, we might be his best option for cashing in...but it has been long suspected he is not interested in staying in Atlanta.

I like both of those lines as a starting point, although I am cringing at next seasons '3rd line'. I think Kulda has done his apprenticeship and must be included into the top 6 for next season.

With Kovy gone, the chances of Max re-signing are slim to none. Hopefully we can keep Kubina, and sign someone like Ponikarovsky.

I haven't seen any comments from Max, but look at it this way:
- He clearly is friends with Kovy (See Kovy's comments on Buffalo)
- He produced more than anything on a line with Kovalchuk

True. As long as "Big Antro" isn't pissed I'm fine. Although I like Max, it wasn't made for long.

I'm just an Islander fan who's curious.

Does Esposito not play any role in your immediate plans? I know he had a serious injury. Is that the reason folks here don't really see him in Atlanta next season?

Also, as an outsider, something tells me that guys like Kozlov and Afinogenov are gonna have little interest staying in Atlanta now that Kovalchuk is gone.

Looks like there's no real choice but to take a different direction - which doesn't have to be a bad thing.

As for now, it'll be interesting to see how some guys produce withou Kovalchuk in the line-up. That could be very telling.
