Ken Daneyko was surely not in the NHL to win cups prior to, let's say '94, or else he would never have signed with the Devils.

Didn't Kenny D have some issues with substance abuse during his career? I love the guy, but I think he is out of line here.

Ken Daneyko was all about the $$$.

The only reason he became an NHLer was so he could make enough coin to support his drug addiction.

That's bs.

I've seen Souray bust his ass for the Oilers every night.

As a Habs fan, that just sounds wrong to me.

Countless times, Sheldon stepped up to protect his teammate while he played for the Canadiens. I can't remember any comments by him or anyone on the team that could give that kind of impression -- that he's all about money.

I don't know. I'm not a player, I'm not a journalist, but to me, Sheldon Souray has always seemed like a genuine person, a great teammate, and a fierce competitor.

I think Daneyko implied that Souray's choice of teams (good teams but teams that aren't exactly expected to win the cup this season) meant he didn't care about winning.

Hence my point : if Daneyko cared so much about winning, he wouldn't have refused to sign in New Jersey early in his career.

He's on the Oilers, the team around him stinks so how exactly is he supposed to win?

Well there wasn't really UFA's prior to 1994 so who knows about that.

I will say this don't forget Dano was teammates with Souray for a few seasons.

He didn't have to sign with them when he was drafted.
Besides, the Devils were a pretty strong team by 1994.

Jeez. Kind of a silly comment, but people still can't resist to make alcoholism references, can they?

What does the fact that he was an alcoholic have to do with this? All of you people know alcoholics, probably in your family, so shut the **** up.

I'd like to see the actual quote. Also, he's a commentator, it's his job.

A bit different, since Kenny was actually drafted by the Devils, and it was early in his career, so it was the Devils if he wanted to play in the NHL.

Whereas, this is late in Souray's career, and he basically has his pick of teams.

Anyway, not like it necessarily gives Daneyko inside information, but Souray and Brodeur are co-owners of some restaurant. Dano and Souray also used to be teammates.

If that's the case, I would have to question a 40 plus adult who doesn't realize the mental difference usually evident between a 22-24 year old just entering the league, and a 33 year old with children.

These guys have a limited amount of time to make some serious money, I dont blame them for wanting to get as much as they can while they can still play. Its no different than one of us leaving the company we work for because another is willing to pay an extra 10-15 grand a year.

I think Souray has looked disinterested the times I have seen the Oilers this year.

I'm all for athletes making as much money as they can. But I think that also requires them to play like they care.

it's childish and embarrassing for some of you to bring up his substance abuse problems.

Ironically, those making the asinine statements about Ken Daneyko's past indiscretions are not embarassed.

Of course, among perfect human beings such as found here, redemption is clearly out of the question for those of us who have made mistakes.

The man offered an opinion, as he is paid to do. How small is someone that s/he cannot discuss Daneyko's point of view, as opposed to insulting him, personally?

I don't think it's childish. When you are bad mouthing another athlete you played with or against, your character also comes into question.

Most classy athletes would give a politically correct response.

Ken probably had too much Crown Royale when he was saying this.

In this case, I think it goes to the topic at hand.

I question the commitment to winning of anyone who lets substance abuse take over their life, and possibly affect their performance on the ice. And I have a problem when someone who did that takes a shot at someone else's professional commitments.
