Martin DOES give us something we don't have -- a number one defenseman. I suspect the bidding will get out of hand and he will be out of our price range. If he could be obtained at a reasonable price ($5MMX5) I'm all in. I suspect he'll be closer to $6.5MM per.

If not, I like Volchenkov a lot. He's a big hitter and a minutes eater. Would fit in nicely.

3rd option? Perhaps a trade for Beauchimin. Given Burke's admiration of Drury, there might be a solution to multiple problems here. Toronto has to move a defenseman or two now that they have Phaneuf.

one problem: drury has a NMC and likes new york, and toronto is very close to the cap.

Why?

Martin is a better d-man and Volchenkov is going to break down much faster due to the style of his game.

His reckless nature and shot blocking are going to shorten his career quite a bit.

Posted this in another thread but it's just as appropriate here:

Out The Door:
Rozsival ($5M) - Traded for a draft pick.
Redden ($6.5) - Waived.
Jokinen ($5.25) - Traded at the deadline for a draft pick/prospect.
Lisin ($.79) - Don't re-sign.

That's $13.69 in cap space opened up for July 1.

Re-sign:
Staal (RFA) - Give him a raise from $.826 to $2.5.
Prospal (UFA) - Give him a raise from $1 to $2.5.
Girardi (RFA) - Give him a raise from $1.55 to $1.86.
Christensen (RFA) - Give him a raise from $.750 to $1.
Prust (RFA) - Give him a raise from $.500 to $.750.

That leaves us with $9.71 in cap space for July 1.

Here's our roster before July 1:

Prospal - Christensen - Gaborik
Dubinsky - Anisimov - [Empty]
Callahan - Drury - Avery
Voros - Boyle - Prust

Brashear

Staal - [Empty]
MDZ - [Empty]
Girardi - Gilroy

[Empty]

Lundqvist
[Empty]

Filling those holes with $9.71 in cap space:
Volchenkov (UFA) - I offer him a front-loaded contact that keeps his cap hit around $4. If he takes it, great.

or

Lydman (UFA) - I like his game. He hits and blocks a lot of shots and won't be very expensive either. I offer him a front-loaded contract that keeps his cap hit around $3.75. If he takes it, great.

If one of these defenseman signs, I fill the other spot with Sanguinetti ($.800).

Now we have $4.9 to find a second line winger, a 7th defenseman, and a back-up goaltender. Shows you how badly Drury's contract kills us. The going rate for a third line center is probably around $2.5. That extra $4.5 million would be huge.

I guess we could throw Grachev or our first round draft choice into the fire, keep Johnson as backup and find a waiver-wire 7th defenseman, but the offense is going to be brutal again.

This has to be the silliest thing I ever seen you write.

So we should stay away from all physical Dmen in fear of thier future due to the style of thier game? He's 26 years old for god sake.

Yes. We should. He's going to break down. He's already proven to be injury prone over his career so far. He's a high risk unless signed on a 2 year deal or so.

Also, Lydman would be a complete waste of money. Dude's career is on a down turn and he's been beyond mediocre this year. Not worth anything more than 1.5M or so.

While Jeff wasn't the sturdiest in the world, he had a number of complete game seasons and a number of other seasons of near complete games.

He was also on another level than Volchenkov.

I like Anton a lot, but I'm very hesitant to offer long term deals to injury prone players.

If Gaborik was taking pucks to the leg/arm/anywhere and running people at full speed, I would still be hesitant about his deal (which I'm not really scared of anymore).

Huge difference in their style of play and potential injuries.

I'd take either Martin or Volchenkov, but a guy I think most people overlook is Willie Mitchell. Under the radar type, would take him in a heartbeat and probably wouldn't cost nearly as much as the other two.

I don't know about that. Mitchell makes $3.5 million right now and I would think he would get a bit of a raise over that, to at least $3.75 to $4.0 million per year. Volchenkov will probably command between $4.0 and $5.0 million. Mitchell would be significantly cheaper then Martin, though, who will at least get $5.0 million.

Mike Van Ryn might be a good, decently cheap option for a 5-6 d-man role, depending on how he recovers from his injury. He currently makes $2.9 million and he has been injured for the better part of the last two seasons (Has played 47 games and is out for the rest of this season).

- Rangers sign Kovy to a 12 year $100 million contract, an about $8 million cap hit.
- Rangers sign Volchenkov at about $4 million per year.
- Re-sign Staal to 3 year contract at a cap hit of $3 million.
- Re-sign Girardi to a contract with a cap hit of $2 million.
- Re-sign Prust to a 2 year contract with a cap hit of $600K.
- Re-sign Prospal to a 1 year $2 million contract.
- Re-sign Jokinen to a 2 year contract with a cap hit of $4.5 million ($5.5 this season and $3.5 next).
- Bring up one of Sangs/Sauer/McD/Heikkanen for the last D spot, I put Sangs in for numbers sake.

If the cap stays the way it is right now, the total salary would be $56.2 million with around $600K in cap space. The roster would look like so:

Prospal - Jokinen - Gaborik
Kovalchuk - Dubinsky - Husalius
Avery - Anisimov - Callahan
Voros - Boyle - Prust

Staal - MDZ
Volchenkov - Gilroy
Girardi - Sangs/Sauer/McD/Heikkanen

Lundqvist
Johnson

Again, this is in my dreams and probably has 0.001% chance of happening, but hey, a guy can dream.

And so I can show you how the salary works, here is the capgeek breakdown:

FORWARDS
* Ilya Kovalchuk ($8.300m) / Marian Gaborik ($7.500m) / * Kristian Husalius ($4.750m)
* Olli Jokinen ($4.500m) / Ryan Callahan ($2.300m) / * Vaclav Prospal ($2.000m)
Sean Avery ($1.938m) / Brandon Dubinsky ($1.850m) / Aaron Voros ($1.000m)
Artem Anisimov ($0.822m) / * Brandon Prust ($0.600m) / Brian Boyle ($0.525m)
DEFENSEMEN
* Anton Volchenkov ($4.000m) / * Marc Staal ($3.000m)
* Daniel Girardi ($2.000m) / Matt Gilroy ($1.750m)
Michael Del Zotto ($1.087m) / Bobby Sanguinetti ($0.855m)
GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / Chad Johnson ($0.850m)
Done, Sign me up for that in a heartbeat!!!! Not likely as you said but one could hope.
