Alexei Ponikarovsky

Dreger reports (via Twitter) that up to around 10 teams could be interested in Alexei Ponikarovsky. No actual team names have been reported yet, but Dreger believes at least a 2nd round pick will be needed to obtain him.

This is mere speculation, but considering Alexei is a usual 20-goal scorer, a middle-salary player, and a 2010 UFA, I can really see the Rangers going after him for one of the players left on the Rangers that aren't producing.

So what would you guys think of chasing after Ponikarovsky to clear off more cap space for the summer? And what do you think the Rangers have to offer Burke that he'll accept for him?

Unless you can drop Brashear, there's no one else to trade.

Sounds exactly like Antropov again. To which i say no thanks. This team needs to start thinking long term instead of another mercenary which will help them reach and fail in the playoffs.

I see him landing on a contender, personally. If I'm not mistaken, there was mass speculation that he'd be going to Pittsburgh and complement either Malkin or Crosby on the wings. That is a move I can see them making.

I'd like us to go after him in the off-season if the price is right (which it probably won't be), but otherwise this does have the makings of Antropov Pt. 2 written all over it in terms of how things went down. This team could've really used Antropov and they could really use Poni. They both may be looked at as "soft" because they don't throw their body around and don't normally get the speed going to really hit someone, but they definitely know how to use their body in the corners to shield the puck and win battles, as well as in front of the net. They both also have really good hands in close. Our powerplay could really benefit from adding that element to it...you have guys like Gaborik and Del Zotto out there, and then someone with size to play in front? Sign me up.

For what purpose is this team going to trade for a rental? They arent going to win the cup, why waste the assets. I swear, some fans here want to make deals just to make deals. 2 weeks ago people wanted to tank, now people want to trade for rentals, make up your mind and stop flopping in the wind.

i dont want to sign any FA's this summer, except for jokinin at a slight discount if he does REALLY REALLY well the rest of the season. otherwise, use that space to sign volchenkov and resign prospal for a slight raise (he has up and down seasons). maybe i'd wait until poni is a FA, and if the afformentioned 2 don't work out, and we can get him at a nice price, sign him for something no more than 2-3 years. as long as his cap hit isn't absolutely insane, he's the type of player we'd be able to trade, even if he's having a bad season.

Exactly. Let the guy go to a contender, we've no use for him.

He is a steady guy. I think he would put more goals in with 23 games remaining than Higgins did in 50+. I'm not sure if would do all the little things Higgins did in the way of forechecking or board work.

I'm not intrested in taking on a salary past this season so it would be a pass for me. I know i may be alone on this one, but I would like to see how OJ works out, we may have some balance to the lines now & that could spread the scoring out.

Assuming that we can score lets say 1 goal more a game with the OJ on the team that could be enough most nights with the way Lundquist has been playing.

If Sather makes a move I'd rather see him bring in another Stay at home D'man & help solidify the blue line.

He's a UFA after this season, which is why if we can get rid of some contract burdens for him it'd be a nice trade in my opinion.

but, why would the leafs do that? i mean, unless youre talking about trading them Wade Redden and Derek Stepan for him, so we get rid of a toxic contract and they get a serious asset back...but that would still be a huge pass on that.

The leafs probably can get back a 2nd rounder for him, and thats a 2nd rounder im not willing to give up.

If Toronto took one of our contracts for him I'd do it, but they more than likely wouldn't.

I thought he had one more year on his deal. That kind of makes me re-think my position.

Toronto would not take any of our bad defenseman contracts (the R & R Boys) because they have a dearth of defenseman, hence the reason they are trying to get Kaberle to wave his NTC. Unless they would take Drury (he won't wave his NTC and Burke won't want him) it won't happen. There will be better offers than Captain Charisma.

i think most of you guys failed to see the point of this trade.

he's a UFA at the end of the season...

we still have dead-weight, and for a "soft-euro" he's put in more goals than our hard-grinding american center/winger who currently resides in calgary.

that's such a cheesy argument anyway. stop listening to your 70 year old dads tell you about soft euros.

Problem is I dont see Toronto taking any salary back. They most likely want prospects/picks.
