That would decent secondary scoring behind Gaborik.

I think Gaborik is a slightly better player FWIW, because he does play in all situations, and in all 3 zones, but Kovalchuk is one of the best pure snipers in the game today, anyone who wouldn't want him on this team is just....well....beyond words.

I agree. With the way teams are locking up their young players for 10-15 years at a time he might be the last superstar/game breaker that actually makes it to free agency for a while.

It's unrealistic to believe he would come here.

A-We can't afford him.

B-Even if we can dump a bad deal and sign him how does that leave us room to improve the rest of this team? Are we one player away from the Cup? Many along with me here do not think so. We do have RFAs to sign this summer you know.

C-Niko Zherdev was driven out of here for laying an egg in the playoffs. Kinda like Kovalchuk did the one and only time he has made it there. Yet Z wasn't worth just under 5 but Kovy gets 11 mil to cherry pick at the blueline?

You act like this player has no question marks. It a sure fire get you to the SCFs kinda guy and thats where we disagree. Only those kind of players deserve the money and long term deal he will be seeking.

yep, hell, who was the last 50 goal scorer to hit free agency, especially post lockout?

I can't think of one...

you can easily pay the man his money. Dump Wade Redden in the minors, don't re-sign Jokinen. Thats 11 million bucks cleared up. If you can trade Rozsival you'd be able to replace him AND re-sign all the people you need to re-sign. in 2 years Drurys contract is over, and well have more than enough money to keep who we want to keep.

Ok

So by your plan thats dumping 3 players for one. Give our RFAs a raise and where do we sign Dmen? I can't see how that plan makes us a better TEAM.

You have traded out only two vet Dmen and replaced them with Kovalchuk with little cap room to do nothing else. You expect our RFAs to ask for peanuts?

That makes him a 50 goal scorer THIS YEAR, not entering his free agent year. Entering his free agent year he was a 35-40 goal scorer.

Inferno how do you know what Prospal would want to resign here? How do you know what our RFAs are going to get this summer (seems like you expect a lot of discounts)? Even if everything you said comes true that is not a Cup contending defense which makes the whole move for Kovalchuk to me seem ....well stupid.

Looking at it again the defensive ability through this whole roster you made scares the hell out of me making me think the other thead could come true, Hank asking to be traded.

I want no part of Kovalchuk. I want no part of Volchenkov, and I want no part of Marleau, and this is why. Not one of those guys should want any part of the Rangers. Every one of them is in a better situation on their current team than they would be here. Which means one thing. If they leave where they are to come here, it's because money is more important than winning. We've had enough of that type of player here. I would add a few complementary players to bridge some gaps until kids are ready and reevaluate the following summer.

Too bad that would cost like 20% of our cap space But I'd love to have them both, I would fix a lot of holes on this team.

Considering that Drury + redden occupy 23.7% of our cap, I'd definitely take Kovy and Volchenkov at 20%

why would any big ticket fa want to come here? its not like were 1 or 2 players away.

we need to first assemble a cast of characters that shows the ability to win as a unit and then fill in what we need to win a cup.that formula is the only way to build a winner. signing a guy here or there isnt going to get that done.

patience people. i just dont think the quick fix does anything but put us in cap hell all over again.

it will be interesting to see what happens with the devils, who are alot closer to winning cup then we are. should kovy not get them there, that should be all the ammo anyone needs to not want kovy on this team next seson.

This thought has been glossed over a couple of times in this thread already, but I really think it's deserving of some attention. No one likes Avery, but I am hard pressed to think of another player in the league who reacts as strongly to Sean as Kovalchuk does. I legitimately believe that Avery's presence is going to hurt Sather's ability to draw Kovalchuk here this summer. How much extra is it going to cost to help Ilya forget about his feelings?

As for the other two guys in the thread title, a big pass on both. We do not need to be signing UFA defenseman. We need to be doing whatever we can to rid ourselves of the vets we already have and then we need to capitalize on our biggest organizational strength - prospect d-men. Whether this means inserting them into the lineup or trading them for established players I'm not sure, but the NYR blueline should not be bolstered from the FA pool this season unless we're talking about a very cheap depth guy.

Volchenkov is going to get at least 4.5 a year, more likely 5. Even if he takes a discount to come here, we're at the cap ceiling and next season we need some space to extend Dubinsky, Callahan, and Anisimov. And where is Brashear? Unless he retires or is traded, both highly unlikely, he has a 1.4 cap hit.
