Shutdown D-man to the Pens

With all the talk of the Pens needing a winger, goal scoring doesn't look to be the problem so much as goals allowed. These two games this weekend to me evidence that.

There's been much talk of the Pens getting a 3rd line center so that Staal can play on the 2nd line. Marchant, Ott, and Belanger all appear to be good options, improving their defense.

But the absence of Scuderi/Gill is going to hurt them this summer. McKee's been OK, but I wouldn't put him against a top line.

What would be a good option?

Pens have about .6 million in cap space, allowing them to take on about 2.9 in yearly cap hit numbers. If Godard has surgery that'd bring them up to 3.6 because of the bonus cushion.

Perhaps a guy like Steve Staios? He's a good veteran defenceman, will fit in you cap (barely, but he'll fit), and he can likely be had for quite cheap. He also brings a right-handed shot to the Penguins, which they don't have a hell of a lot of.

Pittsburgh would be ******** to do that, and to be completely honest, I don't like it for Ottawa either. Gonchar will not fit in our cap for next year.

Or this year for that matter.

If we could get the cap working... then Pens make this deal.

Hal Gill was a great Penalty killer. Christ when he lays down to block a shot or pass, that's what 17 feet covered?

The ? in such a scenario would probably be an upgrade from 2nd to 1st, since we're trading two roster players. And we'd be asking for a reasonably decent center prospect; maybe Jeffrey, although I don't know the Pens' prospects well enough to say. (I mention Jeffrey only because I'm sure Syracuse would love to have him. )

Well there's Mark Letestu, Dustin Jeffrey, Keven Veilleux, Joe Vitale, Casey-Pierro Zabotel, and Nathan Moon.

Moon, CPZ, and Veilleux have the most potential, but the least likely to reach it. The others are likely bottom sixers.

Seidenberg is a name that definitely interests me. I was really hoping the Pens would have signed him last summer some how.

He would be a perfect fit for you and most every other team. The guy has been great. I would like to sign him for two or three more years but we should be sellers instead. If we don't get a late first back I will be disappointed.

What would the Penguins be willing to give for Cory Sarich?

I don't think Sarich would fit in cap-wise.

And I totally forgot the Pens could waive Skoula for a bit extra cap room.

Sarich won't fit within the cap.
