Rangers seeking defenseman

Quote:
The front office, meanwhile, continues to ponder whether to roll the dice on adding a seasoned defenseman before the March 3 trade deadline.

General Manager Glen Sather has kicked the tires with other clubs, according to executives with two teams who asked to not be identified.
Quote:
But the players in which the Rangers apparently have interest will be unrestricted free agents in June with salaries who would be affordable rentals: Florida’s Dennis Seidenberg, Atlanta’s Christoph Schubert, Minnesota’s Shane Hnidy, Toronto’s Garnet Exelby and Nashville’s Francis Bouillon.
http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey...notes-1.811976

Florida and Atlanta are battling the Rangers for a playoff spot. Nashville is a playoff team. Minnesota still has a chance at making the playoffs.

Zipay mentions Milan Jurcina as a possibility. He was a healthy scratch recently for Columbus.

Exelby can't play.

None of those guys is going to make a difference in anything this season, so I'd rather keep our assets.

I wonder who would take a seat? Supposedly the Blues said Carl Carlovachio (sp) is available.

I think they're looking for someone better than Semenov.

Gilroy probably gets sent down or sits for a few games while we work out a trade with Girardi and/or Rozy going out of town.

Assets? These arent top 4 defenseman. So they cost us a middle round pick in a supposedly weak draft. A lot of those guys could add some toughness but obviously most importantly veteran experience. And its not just about making a difference this season as far as playoffs go....its about giving a guy like Gilroy a game off here and there since he is not used to playing this many games in a season.

This is actually a pretty good draft from what I understand.

Interesting to see what we'd have to give up in a trade.

He was, but his wife put the kabosh on that and dragged him back to Russia.

2011 is the weak draft. 2010 is pretty average but not weak.

How about brashear for a 5-6 defenseman to unload some salary for next season and add some toughness for this season.

Trade brashear and get an expiring contract will open up another 1.6million next year to help with capspace.. How is that a bad idea at all?

I heard it wasnt a strong one. I dont think it would cost us much for one of those defenseman who would be a rental. And I think itd definitely be worth bringing someone in. We've been lacking that all year.

I wouldn't be against sending a pick if we didn't already send one for Boyle.

Volchenkov is not going to be available.

Schubert is a 5-6 guy who is physical but won't fight and everybody knows it.

If anyone should be out of the lineup--it's not Gilroy--it's Redden.

Jurcina and Seidenberg seem like the best bet though Seidenberg might not be available either.
