Well what a surprise! I don't think anyone saw this coming.

What are the positives of Oklahoma City? New renovations obviously. I'm guessing since it's much farther west than Springfield that it'll be easier to make call ups.

Unless Eberle turns out the lights when he arrives next season he should become the primary point of focus for the OKC team. Let him play 22 minutes a night down there with no.1 pp unit and pk time.

The Oilers should also make a strong effort to get some college kids into OKC. Petry, Van de Velde and Nash spring to mind.

Would that be the end of the press conference stream then or are they coming back?

It is a little closer yes. They also were getting crowds for the former CHL team that are as big as the teams in the AHL with tops in attendance.

Plus obviously we finally get to re-activate our own farm team (formerly the Roadrunners) that the Oil own.

The one area it helps is travel. Yes itís only 1000km closer to Edm than Springfield, but that only comes into play about 1/2 the season when weíre here in western Canada (~47 games), itís a hell of a lot closer to the American teams in the west.

I think there were several factors involved in this deal.

With the performance of our team over the last 3 years, I doubt they're crying over losing the affiliation either.

Oklahoma City is pretty much just right smack in the middle of the States. It's closer to basically everywhere but Detroit, Chicago, Columbus and the Eastern teams.

From Edmonton
To Springfield: 4,132 km
To Oklahoma City: 3,059 km

From Colorado
To Springfield: 1,885 mi
To Oklahoma City: 674 mi

From Minnesota
To Springfield: 1,467 mi
To Oklahoma City: 949 mi

From California
To Springfield: 3,020 mi
To Oklahoma City: 1,452 mi

From Texas
To Springfield: 1,698 mi
To Oklahoma City: 208 mi

From Detroit
To Springfield: 634 mi
To Oklahoma City: 1,051 mi

From Nashville
To Springfield: 1,037 mi
To Oklahoma City: 677 mi

I did this quickly using google maps so excuse any obvious mistakes that I may be missing.

If you read the rest of this thread. You will see there are other reasons involved. Including the fact the Oilers have been paying the AHL every year to keep their dormant Roadrunners AHL franchise alive. They have been looking for years (since the lockout really) for a good place to re-activate the AHL franchise they own. They finally found that place under the right conditions in OKC.

They did not own the Springfield team if that is what you might be thinking?

Plus the Oilers are going to get paid by Prodigal Hockey for the use of the franchise.

Yeah that one of my faves (among the rumoured names) as well.

I like the Oil Barons as well but I can certainly understand if the locals might not want Oil in the name. Due to their old long time CHL rivalry. The 89ers is alright too though it reminds me of a basketball team name living near Philly.
